Southeastern TTRA Annual Conference Mississippi Lodging Indicators: FY 2004 – FY 2008 Thomas E. Van Hyning Research Program Manager Mississippi Development Authority/Tourism Division Montgomery, Alabama March 24, 2009 SETTRA Annual Conference

LODGING CENSUS AS OF JUNE 30 MDA/Tourism Division conducts a Lodging Census by FY. Smith Travel Research (STR) data are also secured. Mississippi Gaming Commission (MGC) furnishes quarterly state-licensed casino hotel data, via their own surveys. SOME LODGING-RELATED INDICATORS Number of Hotel & Motel (H & M) Rooms (thousands) Occupancy Percentage and Average Daily Rate Revenue Per Available Room (REV PAR) Lodging/Traveler Accommodations’ Employment B & B Properties, RV Spaces with electricity & water Note: Other Indicators are monitored and included in annual reports.

How close were the STR hotel & motel room count data to those via the MDA/Tourism Division Census? What proportion of Mississippi’s total hotel & motel rooms are in state- licensed casino hotels? Why bother with casino hotel data? Where do differences emerge between corporate & franchise properties and state-licensed casino hotel data? When can STR’s Duane Vinson be contacted to discuss research? Should data gathering efforts continue with our B & B Association? A Few Questions SETTRA Annual Conference
