What? The Japanese planned a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base. “On December 7, 1941, in a surprise early morning raid, planes of the Imperial Japanese Navy bombed the United States Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.” (4)

Why? The Japanese wanted to gain control of the Pacific. They thought that they U.S. was too unprepared and weak to fight against them. They attacked Pearl Harbor in attempt to drive the United States navy out of Hawaii so that Japan could invade.

“Their mission was to eradicate the American naval and air presence in the Pacific with a surprise attack.” (3)

Approximately 2,400 people died at Pearl Harbor. The attacking planes came in two waves. the first hit at 7:53 AM, the second hit at 8:55. By 9:55 it was all over. On December 8, 1941, Congress declared war on Japan with only one vote against it. The vote against it was of Represenative Jeannette Rankin of Montana. Interesting Facts

Interesting Facts (continued) “The forces that Tojo sent from Japan under the command of Vice Admiral Chuchi Nagumo included 6 aircraft carriers, 360 airplanes, an assortment of battleships and cruisers, and a number of submarines.” (3)

Aircraft Losses United States Navy: 92 lost, 31 damaged. United States Army: 77 lost, 128 damaged. Japanese: 9 fighters, 15 dive bombers, 5 torpedo bombers.

Significance to the War The attack at Pearl Harbor was significant to the war because in response to this attack, President Franklin Roosevelt declared war on Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor is what made the United States enter World War ll.

Overview On December 7, 1941 the Japanese planned a surprise attack on the U.S. hoping to push them out of Hawaii so they could gain control of the Pacific. This led to the United States entry to World War ll.
