Let’s Grow a Plant

First, we start by planting a seed in the ground. A seed is dry and has a tough outer shell.

Can you predict what changes will happen? It only takes a few things to make changes happen. Can you predict what changes will happen?

The three main things a plant needs in order to survive are: sun, water, and air.

The sun provides heat and light for the plant.

Can you guess why plants need water and air? The plant needs water and air. Can you guess why plants need water and air?

Water and air help the plant get nutrients (food) and carbon dioxide from the soil and sky so the plant can grow, grow, grow!

Sun Water Air

The seed begins to sprout and grow. This stage is called germination.

The seed is swelling and getting bigger as the plant develops The seed is swelling and getting bigger as the plant develops. The hard casing drops off into the soil.

The plant begins to develop a stem, roots and leaves. These are some parts of a plant.

The stem moves the water up the plant The stem moves the water up the plant. Stems help bring the water to the leaves.

The roots hold the plant in place. Roots also help store the food and water for the plant to use later.

The leaves open as the plant keeps growing The leaves open as the plant keeps growing. Leaves soak up the sun and help the plant to grow.

The plant now develops flowers. The flowers have special parts so that the plant can pollinate.

The flowers on the plant are fertilised and new plants will grow.
