Invertebrates are animals that have no backbone such as the Protozoa, Annelids, Molluscs, Echinoderms, Crustaceans, Arachnids, and Insects. Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone, such as the Reptiles, Fish, Amphibians, Mammals, and Birds. This is an Alligator. It is a vertebrate and part of the reptile family. This is a Monarch butterfly. It’s an invertebrate and part of the insect family. alligator butterfly

In this project I’m going to concentrate on Reptiles and in the group of Reptiles I’m going to concentrate on Lizards. A Lizard is a Reptile. Reptiles are ectoderms. Ectoderms have to bask in the sun to get warm and active and they have to find shade to cool off. Reptiles are a cold blooded animal that has scaly skin to keep them from drying out. Some reptiles just hibernate if it’s going to be cold for a long time. A Lizard is a vertebrate. This is a Komodo Dragon, the largest Lizard alive. The komodo dragon can kill a Water Buffalo which is several times it’s own weight! Komodo dragon

There are hundreds of different kinds of Lizards. What makes a Lizard a Lizard? What makes a Lizard a Lizard is it has external ears, eyelids and is a lot smaller than some other Reptiles. One of them is the Komodo Dragon, the Flying Dragons, the Blindworms, the Iguanas, the Chuckwallas, the Skinks and lots lots more. Another type of lizard is the Australian Frilled Lizard shown on the right. The Australian Frilled Lizard protects itself by opening its mouth and making a hissing noise then it opens its frill encircling its head to scare the predator. The frill has rods made of cartilage in it and the rods are attached to the tongue and jaw muscles. They only open their frill when their frightened. Australian Frilled Lizard

All of us don’t really know how the Prehistoric Lizards looked like. Thanks to the bones of the Dallasaurus the scientists were able to see how it looked like because of the bones of this mysterious creature. The Prehistoric Lizard is 3 feet long and lived underwater according to scientists. dallasaurus

These are Pterosaurs. They are Flying Lizards thought to be known as dinosaurs but they weren’t dinosaurs at all! They were Reptiles and in the group of Reptiles were Lizards. Pterosaur meant “Flying Lizard” in Greek. One of the Pterosaur pictures shown right below is a Quetzalcoatlus while the other Pterosaur is right beside it. quetzalcoatlus pterosaur

This is a Perenty-Oz’s largest living lizard. It can reach up to 2 metres in length. This is a Western Spiny-tailed Gecko. It relies on a cryptic pose to avoid detection. If that fails it can further deter a predator by squirting a harmless odorous fluid from rupture zones along the top of its tail. Although it will feed on a range of Invertebrates it particularly likes moths. spiny-tailed gecko perenty

This thorny looking lizard is called the Thorny Devil Lizard. It is located in Alice Springs Desert Park in Australia. This freaky Lizard looks like a dinosaur covered in rose thorns that help it defend itself. Another way the Thorny Devil Lizard defends itself is by actually tucking his/hers head between its legs showing his fake head to the predator. It is 6 inches long and it only eats ants and it also moves slowly... like a snail for instance. Thorny Devil Lizard

This poisonous Lizard is called a Gila Monster. There are two different kinds of it. Only a Herpetologist can tell the difference. It is the only poisonous Lizard known to Mexico. It spends most of its time underground but it is very active at the surface in Spring time. This scorpion is named the Arizona Bark Scorpion. It is the only scorpion with enough venom to be considered deadly to humans. It is located in Utah, Arizona and California. It grows to 3 inches in length. Arizona Bark Scorpion Gila Monster
