Lesson 1: Becoming Familiar with the New Testament “Lesson 1: Becoming Familiar with the New Testament,” Primary 7: New Testament, 1

To acquaint you with the New Testament and encourage you to study the scriptures. Purpose

Can you guess what I’m thinking of? There are four of these. Someone in the class has these. They are called the standard works. They contain the word of God. They are books.

This lesson will teach us about the scriptures and explain their importance in our lives.

WWWWhat are the scriptures? HHHHow is scripture different from other writings? LLLLet’s read 2222 T T T T iiii mmmm oooo tttt hhhh yyyy ::::

WWWWhy do we need to study the scriptures? WWWWhen should we start studying the scriptures? LLLLet’s read T T T T iiii mmmm oooo tttt hhhh yyyy :::: –––– WWWWhy is it important to start studying the scriptures when we are young?

We call the scriptures the standard works because they are the official scriptures we use in the Church.

WWWWhat do you know about the scriptures?

IIIIn which of the standard works do we read about Jesus Christ? LLLLet’s read the following verses: MMMM oooo ssss eeee ssss :::: ( ( ( ( (through the words Holy Ghost) DDDD oooo cccc tttt rrrr iiii nnnn eeee a a a a nnnn dddd C C C C oooo vvvv eeee nnnn aaaa nnnn tttt ssss :::: 2222 N N N N eeee pppp hhhh iiii :::: PPPP ssss aaaa llll mmmm :::: ( ( ( ( (Jehovah is another name for Jesus Christ)

 Let’s read Luke 24:27 Luke 24:27Luke 24:27  Jesus studied and taught from the scriptures often. Enrichment Activity 5  What part of the scriptures would Jesus have studied?  The Old Testament.

All four standard works testify of Jesus Christ.

OOOOpen your Bibles to the contents page (list of the books in the Old and New Testaments). WWWWhat two major sections is the Bible divided into? WWWWhat is the list under each section?

 The  The smaller books in the Old and New Testaments were written by different prophets or Church leaders.  Where  Where do we find the account of Jesus’ mortal life and ministry?  The  The lessons this year will focus on teachings from the New Testament.

 Let’s memorize the books of the New Testament in order! Enrichment Activity 1 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, the Acts and Romans, First and Second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First and Second Thessalonians, Timothy, Timothy, Titus, Philemon Then to the Hebrews, Epistle of James, Peter, Peter, John, John, John, Jude, Revelation— These are the books of the New Testament.  Words:  Words: Anon. © 1978 IRI Music: Music: Scottish folk song; adapted W. W. Phelps, 1792–1872 (tune of “Praise to the Man”)

WWWWho were Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? WWWWhat did they write about? EEEEach of these four men wrote an account of Jesus’ life, often writing about the same events, and testified that he was the Savior.

What is your favorite story or teaching from Jesus’ life?

TTTTurn to Acts, chapter 1. AAAActs tells about the Apostles teaching the gospel after Jesus’ death and resurrection. WWWWhat kind of things do you think the Apostles of Jesus’ time did? WWWWhat do the Apostles do today?

 Turn  Turn again to the contents page.  Most of the rest of the books in the New Testament are letters written by Jesus’ Apostles or other Church leaders to members of the Church.

 Why  Why do you think these letters were written?  These  These letters helped the early members of the Church understand the gospel and counseled them to be faithful.  What  What do we have in the Church today that are like these letters?  Articles  Articles by General Authorities in Church magazines, satellite broadcasts, and general and stake conferences.

Each book in the New Testament is divided into chapters and verses so we can easily find a phrase in the scriptures.

Matthew 28:2–9  In  In which of the standard works will we find this scripture?  Which  Which number tells us the chapter? numbers tell us the verses?  What  What is this scripture account about?  Why  Why is it important to have this event recorded in the scriptures?

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. Enrichment Activity 2

OOOOur Bible was translated from old documents that had been copied and recopied by hand. MMMMistakes were made in both the translation and recopying. EEEEven though most of the Bible is accurate, the prophet Nephi wrote that many “plain and precious things” ( 1111 N N N N eeee pppp hhhh iiii :::: ) have been taken out.

TTTThe Prophet Joseph Smith reviewed the Bible through the inspiration of God and added parts that had been removed or changed.  These parts help us understand more things about the gospel.

 I’m going to take the wordstrips off the board and put them on the table.  I’m going to ask some questions.  If you know the answer, raise your hand.  If you are correct, you can come up and display the wordstrip that has the answer on it. Enrichment Activity 6

 Which two wordstrips mean the same thing?  Which two wordstrips name books that are part of a third book?  Which books are included in the standard works? Enrichment Activity 6

There have been many times in my life when reading the scriptures helped me. I encourage you to read from the scriptures daily. I bear my testimony of the truth of the scriptures and know their importance in our lives.

2 Nephi 25:26  26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

Matthew 28:2-9  2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.  3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:  4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

Matthew 28:2-9  5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Matthew 28:2-9  9 ¶And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

2 Timothy 3:14-17  14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;  15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:14-17  16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
