House Higher Ed Tuition Proposal Increase tuition 5% each year of biennium Raises about $99 Million over biennium Buy-down student share of tuition 3% using stimulus money FY10 tuition increases 2% FY11 tuition increases 2% Raises $40 million for biennium Cost of buy down: $59 Million All tuition revenue goes to campuses Buy down campus budgets for FY12-13 biennium.

Things to Keep in Mind! The Cliff! Stimulus money is one-time money! $59 million buy-down revenue disappears in FY12 It will take a 3% tuition increase in FY12 & FY13 to make up that lost revenue on campuses This does not include faculty contracts Inflationary increases Further cuts to the system oEconomy could be worse?!?!

MSUSA Next Steps Follow proposed legislation Further tuition caps? The Senate has not proposed a tuition cap. Prevent more prescriptive language? Work with Board of Trustees to bring down tuition further from 5% Families have little money There will be large enrollment increases Campuses are relying too much on tuition Begin planning for next biennium Ask MnSCU to tell campuses to prepare their campus budgets for small tuition increases in FY12 & FY13 Help minimize the burden of the revenue cliff
