Six Parts of the Air Brakes We need to identify the Brake Hose, Brake Chamber, Slack Adjuster, Brake Drum, & Brake Linings. Also where the air compressor is located & is it belt or gear driven.

Brake Hose Check for cracked, worn, or frayed hoses.

Front Brake Chamber Check to make sure the chamber is securely mounted and bolts or clamps are tight.

Slack Adjuster When the adjuster is pulled out by hand, the slack adjuster rod should not move outward more than one inch.

Brake Drum The vehicle’s wheel are bolted to the drum. The drums and wheels rotate together. Check for cracks, no longer than half the width of the friction surface.

Brake Linings On some drum brakes there are openings where the brake linings can be seen from the outside of the drum. You should check that a visible amount of brake lining showing.

Air Compressor (Belt or Gear Driven) The air compressor is usually located towards the front of the engine, on the left or right side
