Presentation transcript:

chanuckah When and what? Chanukah is celebrated for eight days in Kislev, which usually occurs in December. Hanukah recalls the struggle for religious freedom and commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Hellenistic Syrians.

when the Jewish army wanted to rededicate the Temple, they were unable to find enough specially prepared oil to light the Menorah. Finally, the Maccabees found a single bottle of oil, which normally would have lasted only one night. However, by a miracle, the one bottle of oil lasted eight nights… Why do we light the Menorah for 8 days

In order to publicize the miracle of Hanukah, Jewish families place their menorahs in front of a clearly visible window or outside in front of the door. This is so people who see the menorah will remember and talk about the miracle of Hanukah. Pirsumai Nisa

In Israel... In Israel, many homes are built with cut outs in the wall next to the front door. These "cubbies" have glass covers to keep out wind and rain!

Because of the great significance of oil in the story of the Chanukah miracle, it is traditional to serve foods cooked in oil. The most popular Chanukah dishes are potato latkes and sufganiot Why do we eat Sufganiot & potato latkes?

Why do we play with dreidel? The Greek forbid the Jews to study Tora, but the Jews did not give up to them and continued…. In order that the Greek will not discover that they studied Tora, they hold in their hands dreidels for camouflage…

Chanukah Gelt it is traditional to give all children Chanukah gelt (money). Of course, this beautiful custom adds to the children's happiness and festive spirit. Chanukah Gelt is given to children after lighting the menorah.

Happy Chanuckah! חנוכה שמח!
