THE TEST OF ABRAHAM Penge Baptist Church 11t h December 2011

Genesis 22:1-19  Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore.

 Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Abraham’s test  The text starts with God’s test, continues with Abraham’s obedience, faith and trust and ends with God’s provision  Why did God test Abraham? What about his promise?  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the LORD (Isaiah 55:8)  A response of obedience….  Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey….  …. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

 ….of faith and of trust  “We will worship and then we will come back to you.”  “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”  Imagine the horror of the father…..  ….and of the son  God’s provision of the ram  Confirmation of the blessing

Who is this God?  God tests and is freely sovereign  God provides and is graciously faithful  Faith of Abraham says “yes” to both  Parallels to Job

Tests of Mary and Joseph  The announcement of a child for Mary  Risk of being stoned to death  Response of obedience and faith ““I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”  Joseph’s response to Mary’s pregnancy  Risk of public humiliation  Initial response of not requiring his rights in law  Final response of obedience to the angel’s command

God’s test  Jesus’ test in the Garden of Gethsemane – and on the cross  “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:41-43)  Jesus obediently went through with the sacrifice for our sake, trusting in his father!  Imagine the horror of the father…..  ….and of the son  God’s provision

Our tests  Can we be radically obedient?  “whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:28)  “do not bring us to the time of trial” (Matthew 6:13)  “give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11)  Tests in our lives  Active – things he challenges us to do or not do  Passive – things we have to endure which he permits to happen  In each case God provides!

 God is faithful and provides an exit  No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)  We can trust him in our tests and trials  “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
