3 God’s Place in our Hearts
Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21 NLT

4 Genesis 22:1-14 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2God said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

5 9When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:1-14

7 The Heart "Heart" (Hebrew lebab/leb [b'bel], Gk. kardia [kardiva]) occurs over one thousand times in the Bible, making it the most common anthropological term in the Scripture. It denotes a person's center for both physical and emotional-intellectual-moral activities; sometimes it is used figuratively for any inaccessible thing. I.e., heart of the seas – Jonah 2:3

8 Man was made to hold only God in our in-most being
“In the deep heart of the man is a shrine where none but God is worthy to come” -A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God Our Heart Longs for God and has a place there that only He can fill

9 A Searching World “Everyone’s searching for something”

10 Living Water “You have made us for yourself, O God, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.” – St. Augustine My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:2)

11 What Takes God’s Place a. Things:
Money and material things, God’s creation b. Thoughts and emotions: lust, envy, depression and pride c. People: spouses, parents, children and others

13 God’s Plan “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love
It would have been enough if God had simply said, “Take your son.”  But he said qualified that phrase three ways. Your only son—not forgetting Ishmael who was also his son, but meaning that Isaac was the promised son. Isaac—the son for whom Abraham and Sarah had waited for 25  years.  Whom you love—which might seem as if God were mocking him, but these words were meant to reassure him that God knew what he was asking.  By saying it this way, Abraham would know that God understood what it would cost him to obey.

15 Percentage of our Heart
Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21 NLT The great holocaust survivor Corrie Ten Boom often spoke these words of wisdom, "Hold loosely to the things of this life, so that if God requires them of you, it will be easy to let them go."

16 God’s Gift 7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? 1 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV)

17 God’s Promise to Abraham
and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” - Genesis 22:16-18
