Let’s look at the tools INFOhio has to help with: Text Complexity Literacy Research College and Career Readiness Mathematical Practices

Text Complexity and Informational Text

Common Core Connection English Language Arts Range of reading and level of text complexity √ Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

What is Text Complexity? Common Core ELA Standards:Appendix A

1. Determine the quantitative measures of the text. Lexiles or ATOS ranges can be used.

2. Analyze the qualitative measures of the text. Evaluate: Purpose Structure Language Knowledge Barnhart, Marcia. Text Complexity Webinar, May 3, 2012.

3. Reflect upon the reader and task considerations. Prior knowledge and experience. Content and theme concerns. Complexity of associated tasks. Cognitive capabilities. Reading Skills. Motivation and engagement with task and text. Barnhart, Marcia. Text Complexity Webinar, May 3, 2012.

4. Recommend placement in the appropriate text complexity band. Barnhart, Marcia. Text Complexity Webinar, May 3, 2012.

Where do we find texts in the appropriate text complexity band? Choose an excerpt of text from Appendix B: We could…. or… Use available resources to determine the text complexity of other materials on our own. Barnhart, Marcia. Text Complexity Webinar, May 3, 2012.

Learning Commons – Thing #8 Finding resources for all learning levels and styles. Also includes several articles on Lexiles. Using EBSCO databases for lexile level search.

Discovery Portal Select Educator’s Guide and search for Text Complexity.

These databases include Lexiles for their articles.

Ebsco allows searches by Lexile too.

Your school’s library catalog can help you find titles. Click on Reading Level Search. Select Reading Program for AR or Lexile search. Enter a score range. You can enter a subject term or leave it blank to see all titles at that level.

Online Catalog displays Lexile or Reading Program in results.

The INFOhio eBook Collection contains Lexiles when available.

Literacy – across the curriculum

Common Core Connection What are the Literacy Standards? Standards for reading and writing in Science Social Studies History Other Technical Subjects*

Range and content of student reading To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. Through extensive reading of stories, dramas, poems, and myths from diverse cultures and different time periods, students gain literary and cultural knowledge as well as familiarity with various text structures and elements. By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades. Students also acquire the habits of reading independently and closely, which are essential to their future success. Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading, p.10

To what grade levels do the Literacy Standards apply? Grades Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar, Why not grades K – 5? The Literacy Standards are predicated on the assumption that K-5 teachers already teach reading and writing across content areas.

An Integrated Model of Literacy “We acquire knowledge and thinking skills best when we learn them reciprocally, when we are asked to read, write, argue, and problem solve as we engage with text and with an organized body of essential knowledge” Mike Schmoker Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning ASCD 2011 Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar,

Organization of the Literacy Standards The Literacy Standards are organized into three main sections Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies Reading Standards for Science and Technical Subjects Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects Page 61Page 62Pages Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar,

Three Big Ideas 1.Literacy is everyone’s job. 2. Students must read complex texts independently and proficiently in every discipline. 3. Students must write argumentative and explanatory texts in every discipline (process writing and on-demand writing). Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar,
