Enduring Faith July 27

Help us out … What are your best tips for enduring a long road trip? We all need endurance … in different areas of our lives  Today we look at faith that endures

Listen for why to obey authority 1 Peter 2:13-17 (NLT) 13 For the Lord’s sake, respect all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. 15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who

Listen for why to obey authority make foolish accusations against you. 16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. 17 Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God, and respect the king.

Doing What Is Good and Right What words do you see in the passage that had to do with showing respect? Who are the entities to whom we show respect? What reasons does Peter give for this respect? What would be the modern equivalent of some of these?

Doing What Is Good and Right How do we submit to and honor leaders we disagree with? Why does God allow government, even if it is a sinful and harsh one? What did Peter tell his readers not to do with their freedom?

Doing What Is Good and Right So, how does being slaves to God set believers free? Where do we draw the line between humble submission to human authority and our right to speak out concerning issues with which we do not agree? Under a democratic systemIn a repressive system

Listen for words that denote respect. 1 Peter 2:18-20 (NLT) 18 You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel. 19 For God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment.

Listen for words that denote respect. 20 Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.

Hardship Involving Faithfulness to God What words or phrases describe how we respond to authority of masters/employers? How will God react to this respect and obedience? What are the two reasons that a servant/slave/employee might suffer or be punished?

Hardship Involving Faithfulness to God What are some examples in our culture of suffering unjustly due to one’s faith in Christ? What are some examples in heathen or atheist cultures of unjust suffering for faith in Christ? What do Christians in such cultures need? To know how and for whom to pray, check out Voice of the Martyrs at To know how and for whom to pray, check out Voice of the Martyrs at

Listen for Christ’s example. 1 Peter 2:21-23 (NLT) 21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. 22 He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. 23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

Trust God in Every Situation To what were the believers called? So how did Christ respond to suffering? Why is it so hard to suffer in silence without retaliating?

Trust God in Every Situation We would rather be spared the suffering than endure through it. Why do you think God allows the suffering we experienced? What encouragement did Peter offer to those who suffered unjustly? What more is required besides merely imitating Christ?

Application Acknowledge the difficulty – Identify a circumstance in which you are having difficulty trusting God – Each day this week, confess to God your difficulty. – Tell Him you believe in His sufficiency and faithfulness.

Application Overcome the “what-if’s” – Maybe there are possible problems you see ahead that would keep you from obeying God in difficult situation – Admit your hesitation to God – Confess your desire to trust Him – Pray for guidance and strength to do so

Application Open your eyes to new possibilities – Ask God to show you where He is working in your community – Ask for His guidance into new areas of service you may never have considered – Tell Him you are trusting Him for each step of obedience
