Types of Servers

Client/Server systems are mostly used for commercial applications such as: · Online transaction processing · Decision support systems and Data mining · Batch processing · Finance and administrative applications · World Wide Web servers · Video and document servers

Figure 1 shows a positioning of the three primary types of C/S computer system servers in use today:  PC servers, such as Windows NT or Linux  Mid-range servers. These fall into two categories: UNIX servers, such as HP-UX, AIX, Reliant or Solaris. Proprietory servers, such as AS/400, Tandem, Sequent  Large servers, sometimes called mainframes The different types of systems have different characteristics, which make them most suitable for different business requirements. All of the platform types have proven capabilities in some areas.
