Background Bristol student– placement year at Torbay - away from friends & family in West Sussex - young, family concerns, homesick Agreed to take over placement Sept – Dec 07: Torbay Jan – Aug 08: Worthing

Support Initial contact via Jane Prior to transfer of student we phoned and ed Bristol University and Supervisor at Torbay Bristol have never actually visited department Bristol have never phoned placement supervisor to see how things are working out Therefore feel we have had little or no support (totally different to Southampton experience)

Differences in approach to Clinical Placement Year Balance/advanced/paediatric theory and practice: Southampton – year 2 Bristol – year 4 Year 4: Southampton – more time for dissertation and research Bristol – lectures 9-5 Southampton – no clinical placement month Bristol - still expected to do 6 week unpaid clinical placement with no financial help towards cost of accommodation, travel, etc

Positives Students have 1 day back at University every 6 weeks More emphasis on rehab/counselling Holistic approach Input from Primary Care

Not-so-Positives! Far too much written work - same amount as in academic years Often set with little/no warning Short time-scales All very vague with little direction from University as to what is expected

Personal Journal Strongly advised – although optional! “Invaluable learning tool” Skills developed in writing such a journal are similar to those required for CPD portfolio

Notebook Record of day to day activities – clinical or non-clinical Scripts, procedures, issues that arise, pathologies to explore, etc

To be submitted at end of placement year Pre and post placement statements Evidence of 5 learning outcomes – 3 written + 1 as oral presentation to fellow students and lecturers + monitoring of participation in class 20 pieces of written work demonstrating the 10 Key Skills Key Skills Grid Logbook!

Written work - Southampton Personal Development Portfolio 2 individual projects per placement Case study to present in Year 4 1 letter or report to demonstrate competence End of placement report x 2 (Placement centre may set additional work related to department’s clinical practice)

What we have learnt Cannot cope with 2 students due to most senior staff being part-time Southampton and Bristol Universities work very differently But the end product is still a well- rounded and very competent Audiologist-to-be!

Conclusions Year 3 should be a PRACTICAL year Amount of written work expected by Bristol on top of learning a large number of new practical skills is very time-demanding and can cause stress and anxiety to student Both Universities could learn from each other But we feel Southampton has the better approach to the Clinical Placement Year
