WHAT IS A GEODE? A geode is a type of crystal. A geode is plain, like a rock, on the outside but has beautiful crystals in the inside. Usually quartz is the crystal inside, but you never know unless you slice it in half!

SPARKLING FACTS ABOUT GEODES! Geode is the greek word for “shape of the earth”. geodes are rocks that are hollow inside. A geode usually forms at volcanic areas. Geode is also the latin word for “earth like”. Geodes sometimes tumble into streams. in some geodes, animals may live inside. Geodes can be as small as 1 inch in diameter or as big for an adult to crawl in. geodes can also have beautiful patterns in the crystals.

REAL GEODE

HOW GEODES FORM! When a volcano erupts lava comes out and hardens, it creates bubbles of rocks. It creates a cavity in between the rocks. Water going past the lava grabs minerals from the lava and this water gets trapped in some of the cavities. These minerals in the water form crystals and the bubble eventually breaks off with the crystals inside!

ROCK AND ROLL Many geodes roll into streams after they break off and people gather them. Some of those geodes are put in geode kits and some of them are gathered for research. No matter how big, or where they formed, there is always a use for geodes!
