SJSU CAMPUS EMERGENCY PROCEDURES POLICE - FIRE - MEDICAL EMERGENCY DIAL 9 – 1 – 1 FIRES, EARTHQUAKES AND OTHER DISASTERS Call or use a blue light telephone to summon University Police assistance for any campus police, fire, or medical emergencies. Answer all questions and stay on the line until the University Police Dispatcher tells you to hang up. Dispatchers need to gather vital information in order to send the appropriate resources. Know where the nearest fire extinguisher and fire alarm pull station is located. Know when and how to use it. If you are unable to control a fire, immediately—CLOSE all doors to isolate the fire—SOUND the fire alarm to alert others—GET OUT—CALL Remain calm during an earthquake. "Duck, cover and hold" under a sturdy desk or table or move against interior walls and away from windows. Be aware of falling object hazards such as bookshelves, hanging pictures, etc. Wait at least two minutes after shaking stops before leaving a building. Move to a clear area well away from structures or overhead hazards such as trees or power lines. Tune to radio station KSJS 90.5 FM for campus information. A campus information line will be set up as soon as possible after a major emergency -- call 924-SJSU ( ) for instructions, information, and updates. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES Call Give your name, the nature of the emergency, and your specific location. Tell the University Police Dispatcher what assistance you need (ambulance, paramedics, etc.). Assist the victim until help arrives. If you, or someone in the area, are trained in CPR, perform CPR if necessary. Stop bleeding with direct pressure to the wound. Do not move a victim unless their life is in immediate danger. Do not leave victims unattended. Be careful about contaminating yourself and others if hazardous materials may be involved. For minor first aid, report in person to the Student Health Center weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or call University Police at BUILDING EVACUATION Leave by the nearest safe exit when you hear the building emergency alarm (fire alarm), or if you are told to do so by University Police or a Building Emergency Team member. Take important personal items such as your keys, wallet, medicine, books, purse, or backpacks with you in case you unable to immediately re-enter. Move at least 150 feet away from all structures. Do not smoke. Help disabled persons evacuate the building. Follow instructions of Building Emergency Team members and University Police. Do not use elevators. Use the stairs and NOT the elevators -in case of fire or earthquake, many elevators stop in place and you may be trapped or exposed to deadly smoke. Do not re-enter a building until the University Police or a Building Emergency Team member tells you that it is safe to do so. For further information visit the University Police Web site at:

Communication Systems POLICE - FIRE - MEDICAL EMERGENCY  DIAL 9 – 1 – 1  Use Blue Light Phones  Use Elevator Phone  Campus phone not working – Use available cell phone Keep Informed-Listen to emergency updates on KSJS 90.5 FM Listen for Instructions

When to evacuate! Alarm Power Outage After an Earthquake, (only if safe) At the Request of UPD and/or BET Member Any other hazardous situation

Alarms and Power Outage When the power goes out or you hear the alarm sound… Remember to Buddy up and report to the designated location The arches on San Fernando Street near the FD&O building

Buddy System Having a Buddy System in the office will ensure we are all accounted for during a crisis. Select your buddy based on your sitting location (office to office, cubicle to cubicle). If your buddy is out, use good judgment and team up with the next available person or group closest to you. If you know your buddy is in, but isn’t around at the time of evacuation, please do not wait, The B. E. T member will clear the area. Please walk to the designated area. If you don't see your buddy there. Be sure to alert the person taking roll call.

Student Services Center – Secured Areas & Exits

Safety Doors The Student Services Building has safety doors. When the alarms sounds, the doors close automatically. Please don’t try to keep the door open. If you need to exit the building, simply push or pull open the doors. If fire does occur, the closing of the doors will help prevent it from spreading through out the building.

Fire safety and Precautions and Recommendations Know the escape routes and practice them regularly! You may be blinded by smoke. Implement the buddy system. Every person in our office should know about the whereabouts of the person next to or across from them. Some of the main causes of fire in the buildings are the following Misuse of cooking appliances Overloaded electrical Circuits and extension cords. This greatly increases the risk of fire Coffee Makers, heaters, hot plates are not approved to be plugged into our cubicle or office outlets. An electrical Short is a warning that we have overloaded the electrical system and is shutting itself off If you have these items in your office, please REMOVE THEM IMMEDIATELY.

SECURITY PROCEDURES Part of the security in our work place is the alarm system handled by the UPD. The other part is us! We have to take a major role in securing our office. How do we do that? Make sure the door you are coming in or going out of closes and locks behind you. Don’t use trash cans or chairs to prop the doors open, while you run to another office, even if you think it will only be for a minute. If you notice one of the SSC doors not working properly, please notify a B.E.T. member ASAP or call the University Police Lock your office and secure your personal belongings Part-time or student staff should not be in the building after hour or weekends unless accompanied by a full-time staff member Do not allow non-employees to enter the building If you see individuals that are unfamiliar to you or an employee who works in another area walking around the office, question why they’re here and who they need to see or notify a BET member. Employees must wear their staff ID’s (including student staff) at all times Notify the University Police Department if you are going to work late evenings and/or weekends. Provide UPD with your name, title and location. If necessary call for a University PD escort. Do not schedule external meetings in secured areas. Only internal staff meetings should take place in secured area conference rooms. “Visitor badges” are in the front customer service area of SSC. Have your guest check with the students working in the “donut”. Also, please provide the students with your meeting information and name of your guest. The BET will review the visitors login monthly. Be alert! Report any unusual occurrences! Our security system will only work if we work as a team!
