The Olympics in 2012 London

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad, will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the 2012 Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September. London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in Olympic Games

The current Olympic Games programme includes 35 sports and nearly 400 events. There are also past Olympic sports (Tug of war, rugby, polo, lacrosse, and golf were once on the Olympic programme) and sports recognised by the Olympic Movement. Climbing, bridge, golf, roller skating and surfing are sports that are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The International Sports Federations (IFs) that administer these sports must ensure that their statutes, practice and activities conform with the Olympic Charter. Summer Olympics

LogoLogo There have been two London 2012 logos: one for the bidding process created by Kino Design and a second as the brand for the Games themselves. This new logo is a representation of the number 2012, with the Olympic Rings embedded within the zero.

The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games will be the fourteenth Paralympics. The London Paralympics will be the first Games since the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney in which athletes with intellectual disabilities will be authorised to compete, following a decision by the International Paralympic Committee in Paralympic Games

Of the twenty paralympic sports, nine sports will be played in London's Olympic Park which will be built specifically for the Olympic and Paralympic games. The ExCel Centre will host a further six sports. The shooting events will be held at the Royal Artillery Barracs in Woolwich and the road cycling at Regent’s Park in central London. Greenwich Park will host the equestrian events. Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will host the sailing events.

Up to 180,000 spectators a day will enter the Park to enjoy the Games. The main venues – the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome and BMX Circuit, plus the Hockey, Handball and Basketball arenas - will be easily accessible through a network of footbridges and walkways. The Park will be designed to ensure visitors always feel part of the Games, whether they are watching the 100 metres final, strolling along the river edge or sitting in front of one of the big screens relaying live Games action throughout the Park.
