 What will the main use of the printer be?  Is it for only a single computer? ▪ Will it be used daily, or less often?  Will it be networked? ▪ If so, how many people will be using it? ▪ Will it be the default printer?

 Will the printer be traveling with you?  Do you want the capability to print in color?  Do you want to print very detailed and high quality pictures?  What other functions do you need the printer to do other than printing?  What is your price range?  What warranty would be best for you?  The warranty and cost go hand in hand: we usually recommend a 3 year warranty

 Once you have found out what your considerations are, you can start deciding what printer you need.  The easiest way to match a printer to what you need is by looking at the specifications

 What is the monthly printing cycle?  Will the printer duplex pages (print on both sides)?  What consumable parts does the computer use?  Is the printer networkable?  How many images are the print cartridges rated for?

 Laser printers  tend to have a much higher quality when printing  They also have a lower cost of per page printing.  Tend to be faster when printing pages  Can handle a larger workload

 Ink Jet printers  Tend to cost much less than laser printers  Some models are much more appropriate to travel with(depending on size and make)  Cost more for per page printing  Have smaller ink cartridges that hold less ink  Multifunction printer are more affordable In most cases the best solution will be a laser printer due to the per page costs, quality, and print load.

 A good option would be the HP Deskjet D1520  It’s very compact, there are not a lot of moving parts that can break, and it’s very inexpensive

 What’s a netbook?

 It’s a small (12” screen or less) lightweight laptop, optimized for and web surfing.  Netbooks also handle Powerpoint quite well, and are small enough that they can often fit into a projector bag.

 What isn’t a netbook?

 It isn’t a desktop replacement.  It’s not for a lot of photo editing (small screen) or video editing (not a powerful processor or much RAM).

Pros  Very small & light. Extremely portable.  Long battery life (with 6- or 9-cell batteries)  Significantly cheaper than laptops ($ ) Cons  Small screen may be difficult/tiring to read  Smaller keyboard requires adjustment  Less RAM, less powerful processor

 Current laptops run around $1100 for a machine with a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM and an 80 GB HDD.
