THE NSW HSC The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest educational award you can gain in NSW schools. The HSC:  is an internationally recognised credential  provides a strong foundation for the future  is standards-based. Students receive HSC marks that indicate the standard they have achieved.

LIFE SKILLS INFORMATION Courses in each Syllabus Attainment in Life Skills is shown on a Profile of Student Achievement where no grades are reported. Relevant for students with special education needs.

HSC COURSE STRUCTURE All courses in the HSC have a unit value. 2 Units Most courses are 2 Units 2 Units =120 hours per year 2 Units = 100 marks in the HSC exam 1 Unit = 60 hours; 50 marks in HSC exam All 2 unit HSC courses have equal status

VET CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS - 1 Board Developed Courses based on National Training Packages provide dual accreditation  VET qualifications  HSC unit credit access to ATAR pathway  optional exam have a mandatory work placement requirement  70 hours over the 240-hour/2-year course

EXTENSION COURSES – 1 UNIT Designed for students with a particular aptitude and talent in the corresponding course Preliminary Extension courses:  English  Mathematics HSC Extension courses:  English 1 and 2  Mathematics 1 and 2  History  Music  Some languages  Some VET

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE HSC - 1 Preliminary Course  Minimum of 12 units HSC Course  Minimum of 10 units  Students must satisfactorily complete the Preliminary course before they are eligible to commence the corresponding HSC course

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE HSC - 2 Both Preliminary and HSC Courses must include:  6 units from Board Developed Courses  2 units of English  3 courses of 2 units or greater  at least 4 subjects At most six units of courses in science can count towards HSC eligibility. Only ONE Industrial Technology course can be studied. SLR and PDHPE cannot be studies together at Kellyville High School.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE HSC - 3 BOS  6 units from Board Developed Courses  2 units of English  3 courses of 2 units or greater  at least 4 subjects BOS  6 units from Board Developed Courses  2 units of English  3 courses of 2

SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF A COURSE Students must:  follow the course developed or endorsed by the Board  apply themselves with diligence and sustained effort  achieve some or all of the course outcomes  complete work placement for VET courses  make a genuine attempt at assessment tasks that total more than 50% of the available school assessment marks for that course.

ATAR - REQUIREMENTS Completion of at least 10 units of Board Developed Courses including at least:  eight units from Category A courses (no more than two units of Category B courses)  two units of English  three Board Developed courses of two units or greater  four subjects.

CALCULATING THE ATAR Board of Studies Raw Moderated Exam + Assessment Marks Universities Admissions Centre Scaled 2 units of English + next best 8 units ATAR The scaled mark for each course is based on the quality of the candidates in that course in that year

STAGE 6 PATHWAYS Students may  accumulate the HSC over a 5-year period  repeat some or all of their HSC courses  accelerate in one or more courses  gain Recognition of Prior Learning
