3 Stage 6 syllabus A Stage 6 syllabus typically includes a: Preliminary course HSC course Year 11 students study the Preliminary course Year 12 students study the HSC course

4 What is a unit? A unit of study refers to the hours of study contained in a course one unit courses contains 60 indicative hours in the Preliminary course (Year 11) and 60 indicative hours in the HSC (Year 12) course example English Extension I 2 unit courses contains 120 indicative hours in the Preliminary course (Year 11) and 120 indicative hours in the HSC (Year 12) course example English (Advanced) the majority of Stage 6 courses are 2 unit courses

A subject consists of a course or courses in a subject area For example the following courses are available in the English subject area: English (Advanced) English (Standard) English as a Second Language (ESL) Fundamentals of English Preliminary English (Extension) HSC English Extension 1 HSC English Extension 2

6 What is a pattern of study? A pattern of study identifies the: number of courses to be studied sequence in which particular courses are to be studied number of units of study the course is to contain

7 What is the curriculum for a home schooled child beyond Year 10? the curriculum beyond Year 10 is to be based on NSW Board of Studies Stage 6 courses of study and taught in accordance with the relevant Stage 6 syllabus syllabuses are available on the Board’s website at:

8 What Stage 6 courses are available for study by a home schooled child beyond Year 10? Stage 6 courses of study include: Board Developed Courses Content Endorsed Courses A list of subjects within each of the courses of study will be available on the Board’s website at http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/parents

9 What is the pattern of study for home schooling registration beyond Year 10 ? To be registered for study beyond Year 10 a home schooled child would follow a pattern of study using Board of Studies Stage 6 syllabuses A pattern of study includes at least 12 units for the Preliminary course and 10 units for the HSC course, and at least: two units of English six units of Board Developed courses three courses of two units value or greater, and four subjects
