The Geisha  Geisha are traditional female entertainers  Perform art such as: - classical - music - dance - games The word geisha consists of two different kanji, 芸 (gei) the meaning of art, 者 (sha) meaning a “person.”

TRAINING AND APPRENTICESHIP

Apprentice geisha are called Maiko ( まいこ ), 舞 (mai) meaning “dancing” and 子 (ko) as the meaning of “child” A trainee is referred to as han’gyoku [ はん ‘ ぎょく ( 半玉 )] Other wise know as a “half-jewel”  There are 3 stages to becoming a geisha.  Takes about five and a half years.  Full-fledged geishas are called “Geiko.” To become a Maiko/Geisha the han’gyoku would have to pass a dance performance

MAKEUP

Makeup  First a wax or oil applied to skin.  White powder mixed with water into a paste.  An un-whitened area on the neck forming a “W”. -This creates the illusion of a mask.  Lips filled in with a small paint brush MMost their makeup consists of reds and pinks Maikos wear the heavy white face makeup almost all the time. Confusion between Geisha And “Geesha”  The geesha’s are a type of prostitute.  The geesha girls would originally dress in a kimono, looking like real geisha’s. Americans who did not know Japan’s culture would assume they were geisha’s.  They didn’t know there is a difference between a costume and an actual geisha.  The words “geesha girl,” came from a mispronunciation of the word Geisha  Geesha’s tie their obi in the front  Geishas are not allowed to have any relationship with their clients  Geisha’s tie their obi in the back
