2. Costume Visual Inspiration- Sadako On the left is a little girl in a western school uniform. It is similar to the style of Sadako’s. The little bow on the front of her shirt is significant to the style of the uniform from the mid 1950’s in Japan. 1 The picture on the right is from 1921 in a location close to Hiroshima. 2 It depicts two schoolgirls in a western “sufu” middle school uniform. Although the picture was taken in the 1920’s, very similar uniform styles remained through the 1950’s. 3

3. Costume Visual Inspiration- Sadako The shoes on the right are special slippers called uwabaki. They were worn by Japanese schoolchildren indoors only. 4 The pleated skirt in the image above influenced the overall look of my costume, including the general school girl look. 5

The collar and necktie in the front of the shirt was a popular piece to school uniforms in Japan around the 1950’s. 9 10 To the right is a real picture of Sadako and her schoolmates. They wore a white collared blouse and a black skirt. 7

7. Justifications for Design Color Symbolism The orange necktie symbolizes determination. Sadako was determined to get better and complete the 1000 paper cranes to make her well again. 11 -Shoes are inspired by Uwabaki, a kind of slipper worn in Japan 1950’s 4 -White collared top and black shirt inspired by picture of Sadako and her schoolmates, as well as the uniform of the era 5 -Sailor collar inspired by the western school style and sailor fuku uniforms 9 -Sailor uniforms were easy to sew and were similar to traditional Japanese dresses 11 -Seen as adorable children’s outfits, rather than navy uniforms 11 - Uwabaki shoes are black for purposes of the play

She wears a traditional mask, fan, and kimono with a crane on it. 12 A red crane kimono, a traditional piece of clothing that is important to Japanese culture. 13

12. Justifications Kimonos are a type of clothing that was worn traditionally in public places and as a daily clothing routine. Grandmother is an ancestor of Sadako’s, so it seemed fitting that she would wear a kimono. CRYSANTHEMUM= Death 26 A parasol used by Grandmother is mentioned in the play script, and is also associated with actresses in Kabuchi theatre. -hair like a Geisha, an old Japanese practice -Nuh mask symbolizes a female in Japanese Kabuki theatre, or a divine/supernatural being 13 -shoes are simple black stage shoes, not to be seen -geisha hair/old lady bun -sweet pea flowers on headdress symbolize “goodbye” (farewell to Sadako) 25

20. Justifications -The black bench serves as a multipurpose bench for Kenji and Grandmother. It is a simple Japanese style. -The doors with square panels are inspired by traditional Japanese homes. They were originally used as privacy screens, and were/are still seen in many homes in Japan. 21 -The red masks serve as props that can be moved in and out of the scene. According to the script, the masks are on poles during this scene. -The paper cranes are on strings hanging in the backdrop of the set to serve as foreshadowing of Sadako’s illness and to go along with the paper crane theme of the play.

21. Justifications -The hospital bed for Sadako is not in this scene, but would be moved into the place of the dining table on down right, bench is brought forward to down center stage

22. Justifications -The living room is inspired mostly by a set of a Japanese living room from the 1950’s. All set pieces (table, mats, door paneling, and neutral colored walls) come from the ideas of an average looking home in Japan. 21 -The floor and walls are black because black is a neutral color and goes with everything.
