Life Learners Academy

GLASSBORO PUBLIC SCHOOLS Glassboro, New Jersey Philosophy Statement The Philosophy of Life Learners Academy is for students to challenge themselves daily as they become increasingly independent. Students will learn skills that will enable them to compete in the world of work. Students will also learn to think critically in order to resolve personal and professional issues they may face. These issues may deal with education, family, the community and careers.

Emergency Kit Basic first aid Emergency kit supplies- (flashlight, candles, matches, first aid kit) Emergency Numbers- (parent’s workplace phone number, doctor, police neighbor, family member, and 911) Taking Care of Clothing Healthy Body/ Healthy Mind – (cleanliness & personal hygiene) Proper place for soiled/dirty laundry Sorting- (reading labels) Settings – (purpose & how to use) Measuring soap & other liquids for laundry Travel Training Using Public Transportation – (routes, cost and time factor)

One component of this program is to have each student develop a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). A software package has been purchased, called Naviance, which the students will be using to assist in developing their PLP. The results of the Naviance online questionnaires will aide in seeking employment in the areas of interest for each individual student. Career Exploration

Nutrition Food Pyramid Reading Labels- (with nutritional parts) Meal Planning – All meals will be based on feeding a family of 6 people Breakfast – French toast, eggs and bacon Lunch – Cold cut sandwiches/Hoagies and Quiche Dinner – Pasta & meatballs with side salad and garlic bread Healthy Snacks Identifying all meals for a meal/day/week/month Identifying all ingredients needed to prepare the meals Meal Preparation-would require use of the kitchen facility and all necessary cooking tools Using a recipe Measurement of ingredients Being able to identify necessary cooking tools Culinary Experience

Dining Setting the table Table manners Dining Out Kitchen Clean-up & Properly Storing Food Putting food away Cleaning up after meals Checking expiration dates Students have been taught about personal protective equipment and cross contamination. They immediately know to put on sterile latex gloves and a hair net before entering the kitchen area.

Grocery Shopping (Phase I) Developing a shopping list – (Keep a running list on refrigerator of everyday items running short, i.e., milk, bread, eggs…) Comparative shopping – (Online and using circulars) Finding and using coupons – (Online & newspapers/mail) Grocery Shopping (Phase II) – requires off-site travel to store location Hands on practice- (locating items in the store) Comparative Shopping for items – (store brand vs. name brand) Choosing healthy items – (reading labels) Utilizing coupons Purchasing necessary items based on identified shopping list

Culinary In-House Activities At this point, the students have be engaged in “In- House” experiences Sous chef with our principal for preparation of “Pasta with the Principal” which is a free pasta, meatball, salad, bread and drink lunch provided to students with a Renaissance Card Shadow school district food service operations

Culinary Experience – Community Based Life Learners Academy students have been assisting volunteers at the Glassboro Senior Citizen Center with preparing “Meals on Wheels” dinners for delivery.
