RUBY BRIDGES

BIRTH Ruby Bridges was born on September 8 in Tylertown, Mississippi Ruby had two brothers and one sister. She had to share one bed with her brothers and sister. Ruby was very poor growing up and lots of times she and her family had little to eat.

EARLY LIFE Ruby Bridges father lost his job picking crops. The people that owned the land were bringing in machinery to pick the crops for them. Her father got a job as a janitor and her mother got a job scrubbing the floors of a bank, so they had to move to New Orland's in 1957.

SCHOOL Ruby took a really hard test at Jonson Locket Elementary because the government had just decided to let African Americans go to all white schools. Ruby passed the test and had to go to court in There a judge ordered Ruby to go to William Frantz Elementary. In 1960, Ruby walked her first steps on that’s schools walk way.

HOW PEOPLE REACTED People kept screaming mean things, but no matter how many times they did Ruby just walked through the crowed with her back straight like the people weren’t there. The scariest part Ruby went through was there was a parent with a black doll in a coffin. The parent pointed at Ruby like he or she were saying this will be you.

RUBY’S SCHOOL LIFE Ruby's teacher said Ruby was a bright student. Every day she would come in and would be eager to learn. One day Ruby stopped in the middle of the crowd. It looked like she was talking to them. The people charged at Ruby ready to hurt her. The marshals tried to persuade Ruby to move, but she just stood there. Finally she moved. When she walked into her classroom her teacher asked her why she was talking to the people in the crowd. Ruby said, “I wasn't. I was praying.”

HOW MEAN PEOPLE WERE When Ruby's teacher handed in Ruby's grades, the principal she wanted Ruby’s grades lowered, let’s say from an A+ to a U.

WHAT TEACHERS DID On one of Ruby’s teachers lunch brakes she walked by another teacher’s classroom and the teacher wasn't even teaching. She was listening to the radio and all of the kids were talking and throwing stuff to other kids, not getting educated.

WHAT RUBY DID FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE After William Frantz Elementary Ruby spent the rest of her life as a travel agent. Later in her life, Ruby met President Obama.
