Leonardo da Vinci mobility project TECHNICAL LANGUAGE IN CATERING AND TOURISM Project promotor Srednja šola za gostinstvo in turizem Celje SLOVENIA Partner Academia Europa, Estepona, SPAIN 7– 28 April 2004

About the project 1.The idea emerged from the LdV mobility project in 2002 “Technical Language European way” – decision to continue and upgrade the results 2.Specific feature: simultaneously running exchange of 4 teachers + placement of 10 students (better monitoring, saving money, supporting the project goals) 3.Project goals to upgrade descriptors from the first project and make a portfolio draft for job-related language in catering and tourism to acquire basic communication skills in Spanish to exchange experience about teaching methods and materials used with the Spanish partner to improve our intercultural competencies to get experience in project and team work to summarize results of both project into a clear idea for further development on extended international level

Our main source of information… Reflections of our students working as trainees in Spanish hotel- language gaps at workplace

Linguistic preparation… Intensive course of basic Spanish - Teachers and students: beginners! - Learning in authentic enviroment - Contacts with the native speakers - English used to bridge the gaps ADVANTAGES : the progress acknowledged by one’s ability to communicate strong visual support (signs, boards, notices, labels), demonstrations (methods of work in the kitchen or restaurant) immediate feed back (instructions understood-task well done) learner’s friendly methods, supported by personal interest (meetings, events etc.)

Results and benefits For beneficiaries: New approaches and materials for teaching and learning a foreign language Descriptors for technical language focused on needs at a work place Idea of creating a portfolio for job-related language in catering and tourism Certificates for participation in the project and completed basic Spanish course (3rd or 4th language) Raised awareness of the importance of intercultural competencies Experience in project and team work For the school: Promotion of the school at the regional and national level Mobility projects became an integral part of a long-term school strategy Promotion of interactive language teaching (cooperation between language teachers and teachers of practical work) New projects following (2 Leonrado da Vinci projects, 2 national projects with European Social Funds), 2 “Quality in Mobility Awards”
