NOMINEES OF BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (1992) Joan Plowright – Enchanted April

NOMINEES OF BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (1992) Judy Davis – Husbands and Wives

NOMINEES OF BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (1992) Vanessa Redgrave – Howards End

NOMINEES OF BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (1992) Marisa Tomei – My Cousin Vinny

NOMINEES OF BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (1992) Miranda Richardson – Damage

THE RUNNER-UP (THE ACTUAL WINNER) FOR OUR GROUP IS.. Although the film was not about Tomei’s character, she played an essential role. Her portrayal of Joe Pesci’s foul-mouthed, scene- stealing girlfriend was perfect. She was the dutiful woman that in the end was the support system Vinny needed, but at the same time was strong minded and to the point. Tomei enjoys independent female roles and that shows in this film. Without her, Vinny could not have succeeded. She is his voice of reason that brings focus in a situation where it is very apparent this he is completely out of his league. And even though her objective is to support her man, she also has a secondary long-term objective of wanting to get married. Her obstacle however is her timing is so bad since Vinny keeps messing up the trial, ends up in jail at every turn, and has all this pressure on him to save two innocent kids, but she can’t stop her biological clock. Her comedic ability to not play the joke but instead play the character makes her performance award winning. The truth she finds in her character’s reality makes the character real instead of a caricature version of a person. The audience can empathize with her situation as well as laugh along with her making her accessible to a wide audience.
