Probe Trip to Pluto Day Two

Learning Objective Students will identify the characteristics of planet Pluto.

Plans for Day Two What do we already know about Pluto Who discovered Pluto? Is Pluto classified as Dwarf Planet? What do we want to know about Pluto? Summary for the second day

Pluto Facts 4 Billion miles from Earth! More Facts in this website: More Facts in this website: Students can read individually or in groups Discuss on what have students learned from the reading.

Who found Pluto? Clyde Tombaugh in 1930 Used largest telescope found the moving bright spot in same frame of reference. Discuss about the astronomers who discovered planets and distant stars.

Pluto is a Dwarf Planet? International Astronomy Union (IAU) voted to classify Pluto is in Dwarf planet group in Three classifications to identify a planet in solar system: Must orbit the sun A clear spherical shape No smaller space rocks along its orbit. Pluto joined with Ceres, Makemake, Haumea, and Eris dwarf planets (Pluto didn’t meet above classification) Video about Dwarf Planets: Video about Dwarf Planets: Pluto has 5 moons

Pluto has 5 moons! Pluto is not in the same orbital plane as other 8 in our solar system. Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra are the names of the moons circling Pluto in erratic behavior!

What else do we want to know about Pluto Does Pluto have water or great minerals? Students to brainstorm with possible materials on Pluto and its moons. Pluto is in minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit. What is the temperature of water ice on Earth? Ice water freezes at 32 degrees F. Pluto is 13 times colder than ice water!

Summary for Day Two What have we learned about Pluto? Do the worksheet activity: WS-Knowledge About Pluto.
