P-16 Division Goal To create a college-going-and- completion culture among Texas public schools and public institutions of higher education

To work collaboratively with K-12 education, Texas institutions of higher education, other divisions of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and other entities to address the following Legislative mandates: By 2015, close the gaps in participation to add 630,000 more students By 2015, close the gaps in success to award 210,000 undergraduate degrees, certificates and other identifiable student successes from high quality programs. Background College Readiness 2006: Texas Legislature mandated development of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS ) as joint effort on the part of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) 2007:Vertical teams of H.S. teachers and college faculty write draft standards in 4 subject areas (60% higher ed, 40% public ed faculty) 2008:Standards adopted by THECB and by TEA Commissioner

CCRS Benchmarked against the best state and national standards Focused on academic skills as well as knowledge Validated through an extensive process involving over 900 college faculty throughout Texas Incorporated by State Board of Education into the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills 4

College Readiness and the 81st Legislature Commissioners of education and higher education determine college readiness performance standard for Algebra II and English III End-of-Course assessments (EOCs) (2012) TEA/THECB collaborate on possible EOCs in social studies and science Performance standard validated by both commissioners on an ongoing basis

What we have learned Strong academic skills are necessary, but are only one component of college success Definition of “college and career readiness” must be broader if our focus is to be on success as well as participation
