Olango Island Located five kilometers east of Mactan Island, Olango Island lies between the Bohol Strait to the south and the Camotes Sea to the north. To the east is the Olango Channel while to the west is the Hilutungan Channel. It has seven barangays, one of which is Sta. Rosa, where the islands wharf and parish church is located.

OLANGO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Olango Island supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found so far in the country. Migration starts from the breeding places of birds in Siberia, Northern China and Japan. Anticipating the scarcity of food and winter cold, these birds fly as far as Australia and New Zealand from late July until late November. This is usually referred to as the Southward Migration. By late February until May, these birds return to their breeding grounds in the reverse Northward Migration. Based on data gathered so far, the birds use Olango as a major refueling station as well as a wintering ground. At Olango, the birds can replenish their fat reserves by feeding on rich supply of invertebrates in the intertidal mudflats. These fat reserves must fuel the birds on the next lap of their journey which may cover from 3,000 to 15,000 km. of non-stop flight.

OLANGO MARINE SANCTUARIES The western edge of the reef facing Hilutungan Channel opposite Mactan Island presents beautiful coral gardens and a dense fish population. The eastern side has better coral corners and more game fish.

CEBU is today regarded as the most dynamic metro area in the country, with growth rates generally twice as high as the national average. Moreover, the Philippines enjoy the highest repeat visitors in Asia, showing that the tourism sector can survive external threats and competition in the region. The number of hotels has increased last years. Opportunities for hoteliers also arise from the country's strategic location. The Philippines is situated in the center of Asia, home of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Moreover, government, industry association and trade union cooperation provides the industry with a strong support system. Recommendations to enhance the hotel industry's competitiveness include the promotion of sustainable tourism. Natural sites should be protected and strict provisions added to prevent pollution and to control the use of energy and natural resources. Existing cultural practices in such areas, which are helpful to safeguarding the sites, should be upheld. Eco-tourism should be promoted.

Manila Times 10/26/07 First-class Resorts Underway Businessmen are investing billions of pesos in building new first-class resorts or expanding existing ones in Palawan and Visayas to accommodate the rising number of foreign and domestic tourists. At least three posh resorts in Palawan were adding new villas and suites as a part of their expansion programs. These resort are El Rio Y mar Island Resort, a sister company of Club Paradise Resort in Coron; Amanpulo Resort in Pamalicalan Island, which is touted as the most expensive resort in the Philippines; and Dos Palamas Island Resort & Spa in Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa. El Rio is reportedly building 80 new rooms while Dos Palmas is adding 88 new villas. No details were given to the expansion plans of Amanpulo, which is attracting rich foreign tourists and a number of wealthy Filipinos. Another Upscale resort, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa, recently opened on Panglao Island in Bohol province. Investors have reportedly committed to invest nearly a billion pesos in the resort. The 200-room Shangri La Boracay Resort & Spa, would open in August The Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort & Spa on Mactan Island Cebu, meanwhile, is scheduled to open in Investors also completed the Camiguin Higland Resort on an eight-hectare lanzones plantation.
