What is the MedEx Academy? The Greenville Hospital System(GHS) Medical Experience (MedEx) Academy represents an important part of our Workforce Development efforts to attract more young people into health care careers. The GHS Medical Experience Academy will support high school rising seniors and college undergraduates in preparation for advanced training in healthcare. When fully actualized, the GHS Medical Experience Academy will serve a dual role as the pipeline for students interested in pursuing a career in health care and attracting students to go to Medical School, Residency and Fellows programs. Reverberations of the MedEx Academy will influence favorably socio-economic, public health, and educational initiatives throughout South Carolina. The Tiers Tier 1 – Rising Seniors in High School Students participate in learning experiences designed to introduce foundational competencies needed for a successful health professions career. Tier 2 – Rising Juniors in College (June 2011) Students participate in progressive learning experiences which build preparatory skills and aptitudes and guide students’ health career decisions. Tier 3 – Rising Seniors in College (2012) Students engage in chosen field clinical/non- clinical, hands-on, research-rich learning experiences. The Beginning The GHS Medical Experience Academy began on July 12, 2010 with the launch of Tier 1 with 12 academically talented rising 12th graders from the Greenville County School District. Instructional Activities Hours Completed Clinical Experiences Community Service Cultural and Workplace Competencies Health/Wellness Symposiums Research (Scholarly Activities) Online Self Study Total Hours Completed The Benefits Credit – Students earn academic credit. Scholarships – Students are eligible to receive scholarships. Scholarships are restricted to accredited community college, four-year University, or graduate/professional healthcare academic program within the State of South Carolina. Academic Development & Financial Assistance Students receive stipends and other resources as needed. Achievements Class Ranking 7 students ranked “1-7 th ” out of Class of student ranked 22 nd out of Class of 208 All students - Top 1/3 of their Class Recipients of multiple scholarships and awards Health Occupations Students Of America (HOSA) Accomplishments Lucas Berry - 1 st in Medical Terminology Mary Ann Forbes - 1 st in Medical Spelling Sapphyre Callahan - 1 st in Pathophysiology Kristen Owens - 42 nd out of 100’s Kaiser Permanente Health Care Issues Exam Starsha Thurston – HOSA Scholarship Recipient Each student will be competing in the HOSA National competition. Field of Dreams Gala – October 6, 2011 Generous donors stepped up to the plate for the Drive Scholars program and raised more than half a million dollars for the next wave of healthcare leaders through the inaugural Field of Dreams Gala October 7, This year’s event will be held October 6, 2011 at Fluor Field. The Drive Scholars program benefits students in the MedEx. Drive Scholars Recipients ($2,500) Kelsey Williams Starsha Thurston Tysona Greene Sapphyre Callahan Ashley Campbell This year’s Drive Scholars served as MedEx Alumni Advisors to the 2011 Tier 1 students. New Developments clinical & non-clinical areas provided guidance for the model and are engaged in implementation. Governor Schools - GHS sponsored 3 students to perform research in Germany. Two of those students provided presentations of their research here in March Beginning dialogue with the Governor’s School for Arts. Nurse Extern - A 9-week summer program with clinical rotations for current nursing students - 45 applications received this year; 15 students accepted. EMT/Paramedic - Working with Greenville Tech to provide this program as part of the curriculum for MedEx Academy as well as for first year medical students. OB-GYN Extern – In the early stages of developing a 9-month experience for students:. 3 months of Clinical Experience 3 months of Research 3 months of Advocacy Founding Pipeline Partners We thank the Greenville Drive, Furman University, Clemson University, Greenville Technical College, and The Greenville County School District Tier 1 Class (July 11 th – August 4 th ) Conducted Open Houses in high schools for 400 students from November – December Applicants from 13 Greenville County High Schools 21 Students Selected
