Waste Wise By Room 9

What is Waste Wise? Waste Wise is a programme that is about being smart about our waste. The Earth only has so many resources and we have to think carefully about how to use them so they don’t run out

What are Resources? Resources are the stuff that things are made out of. Water is a resource- we use it to grow food Oil is a resource- we use it for cars and to make plastic Trees are a resource- we use them to make paper

What Waste do we make? At the beginning of this term Ron from Waste Wise came in and did a waste audit with some Wesley students. We got all the rubbish that our school makes in one day and weighed it

Our Groups There was compostable paper Non-compostable paper Recyclable plastic Non-recyclable plastic Food scraps And glass

The Messy Part We all had to wear gloves and go through all the rubbish- YUCK!

The Interesting Part When we were finished sorting the rubbish this was what was left over. We found that most of our rubbish could actually be recycled instead of thrown away

What We Decided to Do We decided to have paper bins in every class instead of sending paper to the landfill We have green buckets in every classroom for our food scraps to go into. This gets fed to the worms in our worm farm The worms make worm tea which helps us grow vegetables!

What You Can Do Put your food scraps in the right bin Reuse paper if it’s good on one side Don’t buy food with lots of packaging because it will end up in the rubbish bin and in the landfill.
