The Intent of CAS By meeting a set of outcomes, the CAS programs AIMS to develop students who are: Reflective thinkers Willing to accept new challenges and new roles Aware of themselves as members of communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment Active participants in sustained, collaborative projects Balanced

Learning Outcomes Increased awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth Undertaken new challenges Planned and initiated activities Worked collaboratively with others Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities Engaged with issues of global importance Considered the ethical implications of your actions Developed new skills

CAS activities should encourage student development and so they must involve the following: Real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes Personal challenge – tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting Reflection on outcomes and personal learning

Creativity Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking. Creative activities should have a definite goal or outcome. Appropriate CAS activities are not merely “more of the same” – more practice, more concerts with the school band, and so on.

Action Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the Diploma Programme. Setting goals and planning and reflecting on achievement is vital.

Service An unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected. It is essential that service activities have learning benefits for the student

Your CAS Proposal Think about a variety of activities in each of the three strands. Ensure that you choose activities that will allow you to satisfy the learning outcomes. Complete a CAS proposal form and submit it to Ms. Christensen for approval. CAS Proposal forms are due Wednesday October 21 st.

Signatures and Artifacts When you have completed an approved activity, the activity leader must sign a reflection form. You should also keep artifacts from your activities. (Certificates, brochures etc…) It is also a good idea to take pictures of yourself participating in your activities. Keep all of these items organized in a binder.

Reflections When you have completed an activity, reflect on your experience. Evidence of meeting all of the Learning Outcomes through CAS activities must be presented. You can discuss anything that pertains to your activity in your reflection. Use the CAS Self-Evaluation form.

Final Summative Self- Evaluation At the end of your two-year CAS experience, you will reflect on all of your learning and create a final, overall reflection. You will also compile all of your reflections, artifacts, signatures, photos etc… in a well- organised binder.

The Process at PAHS Year 1: Proposal forms due October 21 st Binder checks in mid January and mid June Year 2: Individual CAS progress meetings in October Binder check in mid December Final CAS binders due in March  Note: Specific due dates will be set and communicated to students each year.

Helpful Hints! Stay organized All activities must be approved to ensure they meet the requirements of CAS Complete reflections when the activity ends. Don’t forget your signatures! Keep track of the Learning Outcomes you have met and those you have yet to meet. Submit your binder on time for binder-checks Take photos! CAS is an opportunity for growth and new experiences so have fun!
