Reading Writing Listening Talking

Writing is a major part of the curriculum and along with reading, listening and talking, makes a significant contribution to the development of children as thinkers and learners. Writing involves a set of complex skills that will not develop without structured teaching and practice. At Newhills Primary we are using the Big Writing approach to writing. This approach is based on child centred, interactive learning with a focus on four core targets of …

We collect and “steal” WOW words from each other and from published authors! We collect these in our Bright Ideas books and display them on our VCOP wall. We always try to be as ambitious as possible. For example… expanddeliriousinsignificant segregationindependence observatory

Connectives are joining words. We have found far more exciting and ambitious ways to join sentences together, rather than using BUT all the time… otherwise therefore although whilst consequently however

The way we open sentences is really important if we want our writing to be interesting. Choosing ambitious words and varying the way we start sentences brings our writing alive… Just then Suddenly Another Afterwards Unfortunately Luckily

Punctuation adds so much to our writing. It can get your attention! It can add suspense… It can make you ask questions, can’t it? We use our punctuation pyramid to help us uplevel our work to a more ambitious level.

We will now show you how we use our Learning Intentions and Success Criteria and link them to our VCOP. As well as that, we will show you some uplevelling tasks and VCOP work we do in class. After that, we will go through to Mrs Khir’s class and show you some of the interactive VCOP games we play.
