Hieroglyphics The Writing of the Egyptians By: Kail Yuan

Hieroglyphics Hieroglyphics are a form of ancient Egyptian writing who’s name means “sacred drawings” There are three kinds of hieroglyphics: Alphabetic, representing letter sounds Syllabic, representing letter group sounds Determinative, representing specific objects All of these are simplified to be easier to draw Scientists believe that hieroglyphics used to be a form of pictograms, but eventually led to standing for letter sounds.

Rosetta Stone M ade in 169 BCE F ound in 1799 I nscribed with laws W ritten in three forms of writing T ranslated by Jean Champollion W as major step to understanding Hieroglyphics.

More Facts System had absolutely no vowels System didn’t use punctuation or spacing Several thousand symbols existed; it would take a long time to learn Written vertically and horizontally Being arranged in a pretty layout was extremely important Like ancient Mesopotamian schools, rich Egyptian families sent their children to school to become scribes, and it would take several years to finish.

The word Hieroglyphics means “Sacred Drawings”

Hieroglyphics are a fascinating form of writing, and if you come to Egypt, you can discover the history and culture deeply intertwined with hieroglyphics.
