What is Sin? Which of these actions is sinful - not fully good/ fully loving? Why not? 1.Lying to your friend to save their feelings (do I look good in this?) 2.cursing God’s name 3.Harbouring a grudge 4.Putting others down 5.Cohabiting, refusing marriage 6.Turning a blind eye to a mugging 7.Giving into peer pressure to shoplift 8.Disobeying your parents when they tell you to be home by 11pm 9.Ignoring/ blanking a homeless person 10.Having an abortion To sin, is to do something that is not fully good or fully loving, so it goes against God’s laws. To define sin To explain the need for reconciliatio n To reflect on guilt

Sin: doing something that is not fully good/ fully loving, & therefore goes against God. We do it freely, knowing that it is wrong. 1.Copy out the definition of sin above. 2.Why are these examples of sin? Match it to the reasons on the right. -cursing God’s name -Harbouring a grudge or putting others down -Cohabiting (refusing marriage) or abortion -Turning a blind eye to a mugging -Giving into peer pressure to shoplift **Why does a sin have to be done knowingly and freely to be a sin? It is a deliberate choice to go against God’s will It is a sin of omission – not doing something when you should It goes against Jesus’ teachings about love It is a sin of weakness It breaks God’s Law/ 10 Commandments

Why is sin bad? Even a sin that is “fun” to do, and doesn’t hurt anyone? Why is sin bad? Even a sin that is “fun” to do, and doesn’t hurt anyone? venial mortal Venial Sin: SMALL not serious, not knowingly done, not completely deliberate eg someone dies from food poisoning because of problems with food storage you did not know about Mortal Sin: SERIOUS serious, deliberate, knowingly done. (Mortal= death-dealing.) 1.IN a table, give examples of 2 of each. 2.Explain the difference between venial and mortal sins.

Sorrow & Guilt. Sorrow – recognising that you have done wrong, being& are sorry. You genuinely want things to be different. Guilt – an heavy sense of regret, failure, low self-worth. Can lead to depression, moving away from God & others. Forgiveness makes the person free to live in peace again. Reconciliation means healing divisions (re-concile) - between yourself, God, people, the Church. Recon- ciliation With yourself With God With the Church With others 1.After sinning, which do you need to feel more - sorrow or guilt? Why? 2.What does experiencing forgiveness do for someone? 3.Write down a definition of Reconciliation, & who needs to be reconciled. *Reflect on a time you hurt someone, & really felt bad about it. Did you go and seek forgiveness, from God or from them? Did it help?

Are sins defined by random rules that God has made up? Or does sin go deeper than that?
