Ancient Greek (1200 BC - 46 BC) is considered the birthplace of the Western civilization. The Greeks gave us the democracy, great literature and the first studies of philosophy, mathematics, science and politics. They also organize the first Olympic Games in history. History

Achievements Greek philosophy, centred in the investigation and the reason, had an enormous influence in modern philosophy and science. Many ideas today still discussed, were already debated in ancient Greek, thanks to great thinkers like Plato and Socrates. And maths, the base of science, grew in an awesome manner with Pythagoras (with his famous theorem) and his pupils, that set up the knowledge of arithmetic and geometry.

The inventor of the catapult, a letal weapon in ancient wars, was Dionysus of Syracuse, who lived in 400 BC. He invented it for military purposes, to threw heavy objects at large distances. With this invention succeeded in defeat the Carthaginians and Syracuse became a major military power. Catapults were used to destroy the walls that protect medieval cities. Catapults

It is said that the Games started at Olympia in 776 BC, in the western Peloponnese. Here was the Temple of Zeus, chief god of Greek mythology. People changed from honouring Zeus solely with dedicatory offerings, to honouring him through athletics. In the first 13 Olympics there was only one event, the stadion race, which was a running race up one length of the stadium. Later came the Boxing, wrestling, the pancration (fighting) pentathlon, and horse-and-chariot racing. Olympics

The voting system, representations, decisions... was introduced in 750 BC, when all adults were entitled to attend a meeting that was held 40 times a year. It was necessary that they approached at least 6,000 men and women of the people for a vote to be considered valid. That democracy born in Ancient Greek is now the political system of the vast majory of countries around the world. Democracy
