P REVENTING AND O VERCOMING A BUSE Objective 1: Describe the different types of abuse and way to protect yourself from abuse. Objective 2: Identify rape in relationships, how alcohol and drugs play roles in rape, and how to avoid date rape Objective 3: Describe ways to overcome abuse for survivors and help for the abusers.

T YPES OF A BUSE Question: What things would make a relationship abusive? o Tries to pressure the other person into sexual activity o Tries to make the relationship exclusive right away o Acts jealous or possessive o Tries to control the other persons behavior o Yells, swears, or emotionally attacks the other person o Threatens the other with physical violence 1) Physical Abuse Is a pattern of intentional intentionally causing bodily harm or injury to another person. Ex: Hitting, kicking, shoving, biting, pulling hair, and throwing objects at another person. Or inflicting injury using weapons or belts Abuse is not the victims fault Video Clip: am.costello.domestic.violence.cnn?iref=videosearch Video Clip: am.costello.domestic.violence.cnn?iref=videosearch

T YPES OF A BUSE CONTINUED … 2) Emotional Abuse Verbal Abuse- Using words to mistreat or injure another person. Ex: Name-calling, hurling insults, and yelling in a threatening way. Can harm a persons mental/emotional health by making the person feel stupid, worthless or helpless. Stalking- The repeated following, harassment, or threatening of an individual to frighten or cause him or her harm. Ex: Following a person, standing outside their home, repeated phone calls. Victims may often feel anxious, nervous, and unsafe. Fact: Each year as many as 200,000 people are victims of stalking.

P ROTECTING YOURSELF FROM A BUSE Hang out with others who share your same values and treat you with respect Know your limits with regards to sexual activity and communicate them clearly to people you date Avoid drugs and alcohol. Know warning signs of abuse in relationships. Seek help from someone you trust. You are not to blame for someone else’s behavior, you can only control you own actions

D ATE AND A CQUAINTANCE R APE Date Rape- Occurs when one person in a dating relationship forces the other person to take part in sexual intercourse. More than 40% of female rape victims and more than 10% of male victims are romantically involved in some way with their attacker. Acquaintance Rape- The attacker is someone the victims knows casually or considered a friend. This form of rape affects male victims most often. All forms of rape may be traumatizing or leave lasting emotional scars. g=mncol;lst;2 g=mncol;lst;2

A LCOHOL, D RUGS, AND D ATE R APE Alcohol often plays a role in date rape. Both males and females are more likely to be sexually attacked. Date-Rape Drugs can include… GHB or Rohypnol “roofies” What is Rohypnol? A strong depressant drug that is sometimes used in treating insomnia (the inability to sleep). Can be placed in food or drinks without a person knowing Can cause the person to become drowsy, dizzy and lose consciousness. t-co-campus-safety-rape-tips.krdo t-co-campus-safety-rape-tips.krdo

A VOIDING D ATE R APE Avoid being alone with a dating partner if you don’t trust or know well. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Be aware of what’s going on around you Be clear about your sexual limits with your dating partner Always get your own beverage at parties and never leave it unattended. Make sure you have a way to get home, don’t depend only on your date. If you start to feel dizzy, disoriented, or unwell, tell someone you trust and ask for help getting home.

O VERCOMING ABUSE Victims of abuse or rape may be reluctant to tell others about what happened to them. All forms of abuse/rape are illegal. Reporting the incident to authorities can help prevent future abuse. QUESTION: Why is it beneficial for abusers, as well as survivors of abuse to seek counseling?  Help for survivors (pg. 240):  Help for abusers (pg. 241)
