Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour Dr. Marty Auer Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Take a web tour of a wastewater treatment plant at Click on “Go With The Flow”

What’s in wastewater? Waste  human feces and urine  food from sinks  soaps and other cleaning agents  runoff from streets and lawns  industrial discharges

What’s in wastewater? Water  lots of it!  Urinal - 1 gallon per flush  Toilet - 4 gallons per flush  Shower - 20 gallons per use  Overall - 55 gal/person/day

It’s mostly water! There are about 500 parts of waste in every 1 million parts of wastewater; that’s 500 ppm. It’s like trying to find this class at a sold out Packers game! H2OH2O

So what’s the problem? P SNOT: it snot a pretty picture!

Where does it go when you flush the toilet? This is really not something I’ve given a lot of thought to.

Portage Lake Sewer System Hancock Houghton Franklin Sq. Super 8 MTU M&M Bldg. POTW P P G G G G P Surface; 30” 10’;36” Lake; 48” 20’; 48” Near Surface; 30”

It’s a 24/7 thing! The Portage Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant was built in and cost$20M. On average, the plant receives 2.8 MGD of raw wastewater with peak flows >10 MGD. If there are 7.48 gallons in 1 ft 3, how many days of sewage flow would it take to fill Hancock H.S. to the roof? How much?

It’s a 24/7 thing! The Portage Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant was built in and cost$20M. On average, the plant receives 2.8 MGD of raw wastewater with peak flows >10 MGD. The average daily flow to the Portage Lake Treatment Plant would fill the EERC to the roof in 4 days. How much?

Then it snot a problem! P SNOT: it snot a pretty picture!

How do we treat it? Then it snot a problem! Bacteria Protozoa

And where does it go from here? Treated effluent from the Portage Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant is discharged to Portage Lake … an important recreational resource for all of us.

Provides specialized training in water and wastewater treatment theory and application to both entry level personnel and those already in the field. Persons who complete degree requirements and gain appropriate work experience may qualify to progress through certification to highest grade licensure in municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment. Associate of Applied Science Degree in Water Technology

Work for an engineering consulting firm designing and constructing plants to treat drinking water and wastewater and the associated sewers and water distribution systems, predict down wind concentrations of air pollutants for companies attempting to obtain air permits, develop a solid waste management plan, clean up contaminated soil, groundwater, river and lake sediments, restore abandoned urban sites to viable business or community green spaces.
