ZSIM enabling innovative services to improve quality of life Maura Turolla Elisa Alessio Telecom Italia – Innovation & Engineering Milan, 16 th March 2006

AGENDA  Telecom Italia and ZigBee: The History  Why ZigBee?  Handset as ZigBee Gateway  What’s Z-SIM?  Z-SIM Use Cases: m-commerce and beyond  Conclusions

Our Vision: sensors & tags a pervasive technology Security Access Control HOME AUTOMATION APPLIANCE CONTROL Remote Control: TV VCR DVD/CD Security Air Conditioning Control Lightining Access Control Appliance Control ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING INDUSTRIAL CONTROL HEALTHCARE BUILDING AUTOMATION AUTOMOTIVE Ad hoc indoor/outdoor network Home/Environment 1 Home Environment 2 Coordinator Gateway FMC Network Service Center Ad hoc indoor/outdoor network Our Vision: TeraBytes of information to be collected, aggregated, elaborated

Telecom Italia and ZigBee History (I) RFID  RFID Demo for turistic info services 2004 ZigBee  July

Why ZigBee? Compared to other proximity radio technologies, like  RFID, NFC, contact less  Bluetooth the main key-values driving us to ZigBee choice are:  Disappeared point-to-point tag-reader concept, no more limitations to star topologies (thousands of nodes)  Pervasive Ad-hoc Self-organizing Mesh Networks  Configurable Radio Range: based on service requirements, from contactless (~cm) to meters and even kilometers, using multi-hop  High Security Level (encryption and authentication at all protocol layers, concept of trust center, no collisions)  Easy integration in apppliance/terminals in miniaturized peripherals with integrated antenna RFID

ZigBee Gateway in the Handset  Gateway on user terminals enables:  easy connection of ZigBee networks (PAN) with the operator traditional network infrastructure and information technology  HW/SW resources optimization (power, CPU)  Mobile terminal as a gateway to collect and display information  In a mobile phone the SIM, the personal token, with Zigbee node can play the Gateway role Service Center NETWORK OPERATOR INFRASTRUCTURE 1. Confirmation for buying “Il fuggiasco”. Push Ok. ZigBee Network The Telecom operator not only for transporting data:  Trust-Center: security, user authentication, reliability  Service Provider of new value-added services  Service management, configuration and personalization

Telecom Italia and ZigBee History (II) RFID  RFID Demo for turistic info services 2004 ZigBee  July 2005 …towards ZSIM First LABprototypes First LAB prototypes Z-SIM & Z-NodespecsZ-SIM & Z-Node specs to card and terminals manufacturer Z-SIM Service ConceptsZ-SIM Service Concepts ZigBee SIM requirements ZigBee ZSIM ZSDIO

December 2005: Telecom Italia announces ZSIM…

What’s Z-SIM? ZigBee node fully integrated in a SIM card (Antenna + RF + Processing) User centric approach The SIM has all the user information in terms of profiling, service personalization, credit SIM is the Key-element for security, trusted environment (user authentication, content protection) Gateway on SIM guarantees the permanent connection between Service Center and Ad hoc network for gathering info and reconfiguration A SIM usable in all mobile terminals Mobile terminal independency (no changes needed in the mobile terminal, like for BT, NFC) ZSIM is independent from terminal tiers Not invasive technology: transparent to the user Enabler for a multitude of innovative services Interaction with objects (Internet of Things) M-commerce: payments and ticketing Accelerating fixed and mobile convergence Z-SIM

Z-SIM Technological Challenges  Limited dimensions, in terms of area and thickness  The SIM position in the handset (between battery and terminal main board) requires an optimized antenna designed to avoid reducing radio signal and limiting the radio range  IEEE coexistence with other radio technologies (e.g. WiFi, BT) First Lab Prototype Z-SIM fully integrated prototype with real SIM dimensions …started as a big challenge and now a reality! Z DTT Pay-TV 1H05 1H06 2H06 2H05 Z-SIM Z  Analysis for ZigBee integration  Firmware Developments  LAB Measures for ZigBee compatibility with Wi-Fi and BT Z-SIM launch and first services  Z-SIM fully integrated LAB tests and measures with TIM terminals  Use Cases development

Customers Database & Billing Pay-TV DB Encrypted Signal DTT with ZigBee node STEP 1: The event (e.g. a film) is selected Z SIM Card ZigBee Node Z STEP 2: Data Exchange via ZigBee The decoder sends the code event to the Z-SIM, asking to buy the selected event STEP 3:Transaction with SMS The mobile phone with SIMTOOLKIT application initiates the transaction Step 4: Unblock decoder The Pay TV provider unblocks the user smart- card and releases the event Z-SIM Use Case (1) : DTT STB 1. Confirmation for buying “Il fuggiasco”. Push Ok.

Z-SIM Use Case (2): Cinema Example DB Z Do you confirm the purchase of “La fabbrica di cioccolato”? STEP 2: User having Z-SIM is recognized by the environment and is invited to buy a cinema ticket GPRS/UMTS Encrypted SMS Step 3: The users with SIMTOOLKIT application buy the content. The operator manages the bill transaction and download the token to the SIM for enabling the access to the cinema STEP 1: Environment with ZigBee node Cinema Z Step 4: The token is received and sent to the printer via ZigBee The ticket is automatically printed Z

Z-SIM: m-commerce and beyond Service Center Distribution Network Digital Smart City  Access Control  Parking payment system  Infomobility services (e.g. traffic control)  Environmental Monitoring  Localization M-Commerce Services  m-payments (bar, shops, supermarkets)  m-ticketing (cinema, train, bus) Home Automation&Control  Lights, HVAC, Domestic appliances  Entertainment (e.g. DTT)  Healthcare, Tele-assistance  Monitoring & Security (e.g. temperature, gas) Mobile Terminal Z-SIM Z-SIM is the hub of the interaction between user and objects ZigBee Smart Home

Conclusions Z-SIM enables plug-and-play, reliable and trusted interaction between user and objects Z-SIM and ZigBee growth offer a great opportunity to improve the quality of our life Many open points We have to work all together to create a complete ZigBee ecosystem Telecom Italia is ready to connect its customers to this ecosystem… and you? ________________________________________ HW & SW Innovation Innovation and Engineering Telecom Italia
