6 + 1 Writing Traits

 Word choice is choosing words that can make your writing a masterpiece.  An author needs to paint a picture in the mind of the reader. Word choice can add color to your masterpiece.

 Change dull verbs into colorful ones.  Use nouns that create a picture.  Colorful verbs and specific nouns are best but also use adjectives and adverbs to add flavor to your writing.

 Choose verbs that create a picture in the mind of the reader.  Don’t just use the verbs is, are, was, and were. Expand on it!  The day was hot.  The July afternoon was so blistering it felt as though I could actually cook an egg on the sizzling sidewalk.

 Nouns are used to show who, what, when, or where.  When using nouns think, “Can I be more specific?”  Car - ?  Building - ?  School - ? Don’t just say dog…say Dalmatian!

 Adverbs describe verbs. They show how, when, where, and how often.  angrily, fast, badly, often, politely  Adjectives describe a noun.  chubby, mysterious, lazy, glamorous, brave, yummy, creepy  Use adverbs and adjectives to add color to your writing!

Make a masterpiece using words! Think of words as the paint and the paper as the canvas. When you choose the most colorful and exciting words in your writing, it can truly be a work of art! Can you see the difference? Always add color to your writing!
