These are explorers, brave and bold explorers, uh-huh, uh-huh! 1

From Greenland came a Viking- Whose name was Eriksson. He searched for a place he’d heard about since he was only one! South along the Canadian coast the sailors went ashore And built mud houses, called it Vinland, then went home once more! 2

These are explorers, brave and bold explorers, uh-huh, uh-huh! 3

Christopher Columbus- Had dreamed of sailing west To get to Asia skirting Africa was not the best. A quicker, more direct route- Was what Columbus sought But for many years with Isabella and Ferdinand he fought! 4

These are explorers, brave and bold explorers, uh-huh, uh-huh! 5

In 1492-Columbus asked again. He promised them great wealth and lands and then they gave him men. Three ships set sail in August- And he was in his way To an island called San Salvador on that October day. 6

Ponce de Leon- Was sent to us from Spain. Although a brave explorer- He had a different reign. He governed Puerto Rico- And heard of Bimini, A place where there was water that filled older folks with glee! 8

The “fountain of youth” was said to make old people young again. So Ponce sailed north, but could he find it? He said, “Yes I can!” He landed on the mainland- Near St. Augustine No Bimini, but he was the first Spaniard ever seen! 10

de Soto’s search for gold began in He started out in Florida then headed up the line. By winter it was Georgia then the Carolinas both. Alabama, Tennessee to find gold was his oath! 12

Destruction all around him- Conquistadors they were. With many of the natives- Fierce fighting did occur. Although he found no gold- de Soto did make claim To our southeastern USA for his beloved Spain. 14

Chance for riches sent the French to America for fur. de Champlain was sent to map the place where beavers were. Exploring New York and Canada took almost 5 long years. Then Quebec became the first French settlement to appear. 16

The Half Moon came from England- In search of spices new. Henry Hudson was the captain of this mutinous crew. A shorter way to the Orient he never quite discovered But Henry searched the Hudson River and our lands were uncovered! 18

Marquette and Joliet- Came all the way from France They canoed the Mississippi- And took a great big chance. Another French explorer- Whose name was “Sir” La Salle Claimed the land that we all call Louisiana now. 20
