1 European Explorers

2 Why did the Explorers want to Explore?
There were several reasons for the Spanish, French, and English to explore these new lands. Some of these explorations were to find riches or gold. The explorers also explored trying to find valuable natural resources. The explorers wanted to spread their religion to the new land. The explorers also chose to explore to seek the glory of completing the task. Its easy to remember the reasons: The 3 Gs God, Gold, and Glory!

3 What were the obstacles the Explorers faced?
There were many obstacles that the explorers faced in their travels. The explorers many times did not have maps to the lands they were going to. This made the journey difficult for them. The explorers many times ran out of supplies on their trip. The explorers were not used to the climate of the new land, and this was hard for many of them. The explorers also had to deal with new diseases they were not used to. The explorers also had to deal with the fear of the unknown.

4 John Cabot Cabot was sponsored by England on his journey.
He had no maps to help him on his journey to Asia. One of his sons, Sebastian, joined him on the trip! He claimed the eastern coast of Canada for England, where fish were plentiful. There were other Europeans went there to set up fishing companies.

5 Vasco Nunez de Balboa He was sponsored by Spain on his journey.
He had terrible altercations with Native Americans the made his journey difficult. He wanted to find new land for the Spanish to settle, and he was in search of a land route to the Pacific Ocean. He sailed to present day Panama, and once there he explored the mountains. He did eventually find the Pacific Ocean.

6 Juan Ponce de Leon He was sponsored by Spain on his journey.
He had trouble with Native Americans during his explorations. He wanted to find gold and the legendary “Fountain of Youth”. He was the first European to reach Florida! He gave Florida its name after the Spanish word for flower.

7 Christopher Columbus Columbus grew up in Italy, but he was sponsored by Spain on his journey. He had no maps to help him on his journey. His crew was extremely frightened on the trip. His goal was the reach Asia from the west. He made three voyages on several different ships, and he eventually settled in Central and South America! He was the first European to reach the New World! Columbus had to ask the King and Queen of Spain several times over several years to fund his trip before they finally agreed!

8 Henry Hudson Hudson was sponsored by England on his journey.
He had difficulties with his crew on his mission. They mutinied or quit in the cold weather of North America. His goal was to discover the Northwest Passage to Asia. He explored up the Hudson River in present day New York. When Hudson’s crew mutinied, he was kicked off the boat and never seen again!

9 Jacques Cartier Cartier was sponsored by France on his journey.
He had terrible sickness among his crew during the journey. He also wanted to find a water route to Asia. He discovered the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada. He named the area “Kanata,” the Iroquois word for “village.” He tried to create a settlement, but it didn’t last the winter.
