Equalising Education Educational Divides in the UK

There is up to a 40% gap in attainment between pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and those from wealthier families. In % of poorer pupils achieved 5 A*-C grades compared to 64% of wealthier pupils The gap widens as children get older. The gap between girls and boys is small but girls from poorer families are the lowest achievers. The headlines at school Source: Education Select Committee (2014)

68% of women achieve a 1 st or 2:1 compared to 63% of men. Women in the UK are a third more likely to go to university than men Wealthy students are twice as likely to go to university than poorer students, but the gap is narrowing. Some subjects are becoming female dominated at university: Medicine and related fields (70% female); Law (62% female); Education (80% female) The headlines at university Source: Independent Commission on Fees (2014) and UCAS (2012)
