Measuring Capacity 1SMI3P2

 Can you build a set of personal references to make estimations easier and more accurate? 2SMI3P2

 volume – the three-dimensional space occupied by something. For example, how much soda you have in a can. It might be full or half empty.  capacity – the volume of fluid (such as water) a container can hold when full. This is when a container is filled to the very top. SMI3P23

 graduated cylinder – a transparent cylinder marked with evenly spaced lines for determining the volumes of liquids.  syringe – a cylinder and piston system used to draw up, measure, and transfer liquids. 4SMI3P2

 The syringe measures exactly 50 ml. of water when the plunger is pulled up until it stops. I is used to measure only 50 ml. increments of water.  The graduated cylinder has lines drawn at every milliliter. It is used to measure any quantity of water between 0 and 50 ml. 5SMI3P2

 Each person in your group should practice: ◦ measuring one syringe of water from a full cup ◦ pouring different amounts of water into the graduated cylinder ◦ reading the volume of milliliters  Keep all materials in the basin to control spills SMI3P26

 You will measure the volume of four different containers.  First write down your estimate.  Then color your estimate yellow.  Each person will measure a volume of a container and the others will check to make sure that the measurement is accurate.  Make sure you record how many syringes of water are removed and the amount of water in the graduated cylinder. SMI3P27

 For each container subtract the smaller number from the larger to find the difference.  If the actual volume was more than your estimate then put a + in front of the difference. ◦ This means that your estimate was too high.  If the actual volume was less than your estimate then put a – in front of the difference. ◦ This means that your estimate was too low. SMI3P28

 Use your science vocabulary words: capacity, volume, syringe and graduated cylinder to complete this quiz. SMI3P29

 Volume – the three-dimensional space occupied by something. Volume is any given amount.  Capacity – the volume of fluid (such as water) a container can hold when full. This is the amount a container holds when it is completely full. SMI3P210

 syringe - a cylinder and piston system used to draw up, measure and transfer liquids.  graduated cylinder – a transparent cylinder marked with evenly spaced lines for determining the volumes of liquids. SMI3P211

 How many milliliters does the syringe measure? ◦ 50 ml  How can you find out how many milliliters are in a liter? ◦ Use a syringe and/or graduated cylinder to measure the water in a liter container. SMI3P212

 Can you build a set of personal references to make estimations easier and more accurate?  Your estimations will become easier to make and more accurate when you practice measuring different sized containers with measurement tools that hold standard measurements, such as, syringes and graduated cylinders. These will be your personal references. 13SMI3P2
