Assessment Formative assessment The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value (The Eberly Center at Carnegie Mellon, 2014)

Assessment Summative assessment The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses. State Assessments Ohio’s new state tests will replace the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) and the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) The new state assessments will be administered in: English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. These tests will be computer-based and administered on-line

State Testing Update The Mid-Biennium Review requires the State Superintendent for Public Instruction to have recommendations for state testing reductions A state committee has been created and is working to address the excess of standardized testing. Grandview Heights City Schools Superintendent Andrew Culp is on that committee and is advocating for our students. These assessments are a major shift across the state of Ohio. The outcomes and implications are a major question. The loss of instruction time as a result of these assessments ranges from 9-17 days depending on student age.
