Pregunta esencial: How do I say that I did something using the past tense?

 What is the point of conjugating verbs in Spanish? CONJUGATE  We CONJUGATE verbs in order to have subject-verb agreement.  It changes based on WHO is doing the action!

tense  We also conjugate verbs according to WHEN the action takes place (tense)  The preterite tense is used to describe an action completed in the PAST.  Just like in the present tense, we conjugate verbs in the preterite by dropping the –ar, - er, -ir and adding the appropriate endings.

 Ejemplo: Hablar – to talk / speak  Yo  drop –ar and add -é Tú  drop the –ar and add -aste  Yo habléI spoke Tú hablasteYou spoke

 Write the correct conjugation of the verbs & their English translations.  Yo (escuchar)  Yo (participar)  Tú (practicar)  Tú (contestar)

 Conjugate the verbs with the correct endings & translate to English  Yo (escuchar) – escuché  Yo (participar) - participé  Tú (practicar) - practicaste  Tú (contestar)- contestaste

 Ejemplo: Barrer – to sweep Describir – to describe  Yo  drop –er/-ir and add -í Tú  drop the –er/-ir and add -iste  Yo barrí Tú barriste  Yo describí Tú describiste

--ER / --IR ARE CONJUGATED THE SAME IN THE PRETERITE

 Write the correct conjugation of the verbs & their English translations.  Yo (beber)  Yo (compartir)  Tú (asistir)  Tú (aprender)

 Write the correct conjugation of the verbs & their English translations.  Yo (beber) Yo bebí  Yo (compartir)Yo compartí  Tú (asistir) Tú asististe  Tú (aprender)Tú aprendiste

 The verb ‘ir’ means to go has an irregular conjugation in the preterite.  Yo fui = I went  Tú fuiste = you went  ejemplo= Yo fui al centro comercial I went to the mall.

 The verb hacer is also irregular when conjugated in the preterite tense.  Yo hice – I did / I made  Tú hiciste – You did / You made Ejemplo: Yo hice la tarea. ¿Hiciste tú ejercicio? * How is hacer irregular?

Translate:  I went to class. (ir)  You ate a pizza. (comer)  I drank milk. (beber)  You participated in class. (participar)

 I went to class. Yo fui a la clase.  You ate a pizza. Tú comiste una pizza.  I drank milk. Yo bebí leche.  You participated in class. Tú participaste en la clase.
