International Academy Design and Technology Technology Classes

Microcomputer Hardware/Software I & II While in Microcomputers I we studied internal subsystems of the Intel-based personal computers. We built a computer, installed software, configured it and performed what ever troubleshooting was needed on the personal computer system. During Microprocessors II I expanded my knowledge of data transfer and magnetic storage devices, as well as trouble shoot and repair monitors, printers, and peripheral devices.

Telecommunications Our class explored telecommunication technologies and the structure of the telecommunications industry. Our class was introduced to basic concepts and the implications or related advanced technologies. Some of what was covered was Analog vs. digital signals, Baud Rate vs. bits per second, Bandwidth, Narrowband vs. wideband, Streaming media, Protocols, OSI model, LANs, MANs, WANs, and Hubs, Bridges, routes.

Internet & Intranet Communication The course introduced our class on how to set up and maintain an efficient intranet with Windows server software. In class labs allowed us to set up a server while creating the content and developing intranet applications such as group scheduling, discussions, and database access.

Information and Technology in Society We viewed how technology was being used by society today. An introduction on basic micro hardware, software and operating systems. Our class also introduced to application software such as Microsoft word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Our class reviewed some basic problem solving that pertained to hardware, software and the operating systems.

Human-Computer Interaction The class was introduced to how users interact with the computing systems. We looked at user interfaces and the problems that can arise depending on who the user is or even the architect flaws of sites we viewed. We viewed these sites for usability issues. We viewed a particular site for usability flaws, mapped the current structure and defined wrote recommendations to make the site more user friendly.

Introduction to Programming Our class was introduced to C+ programming where we viewed some history and wrote some basic input/out operations, iterations, arithmetic operations, arrays pointers, and files while using a compiler.

Java Programming Our class learned basic object oriented programming in JAVA through demonstrations and labs.

Intro to Network Technology Open System Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model, basic network hardware components and basic network protocols were some of the topics covered in this class. Our class explored network models and terminology as well.

Network Design This course was one of four classes using Cisco business solution where we studied processes and techniques that may be used to design networks for small to medium sized networks as well as learn technical requirements.

Advanced Network Technology Our class explored network technology Some of what we learned are as follows: network interface cards (NIC), addressing the network, planning and troubleshooting along with optimizing networks, wired area networks TCP/IP

Routing and Switching This was an introduction course where learned about the basic physical and data link layers of the IOS(Internetworking Operating System) that is used with routers, bridges and switches as well as the development of small to mid size LANs.

Introduction to Network Management During this network management class, we viewed network sceneries, network performance enhancement, remote management, and preventative maintenance while using case studies and research.

Information Systems Security During this class we examined how important security is. We look at the Security Systems Development Life Cycle (SecSDLC) model and developed an understanding of how to deal with security threats in an organization.

Windows Server Administration During our class we examined during lecture Windows server system configuration as well as security measures, printer definitions and queue management. During labs administrative day-to-day functions which included: how to set up users, directories, menus and login scripts.

Windows Workstation Administration During lecture and labs we learned to install windows XP operating system. During lab we learned to add, remove, and reconfigure workstation hardware. We also added, removed, and modified additional software. We also viewed file system security, process management, performance monitoring, storage management, data backup and restoration along with disaster recovery.

UNIX Systems During this class we viewed the history of Unix/Linux as well as explored its various operating systems, software applications and hardware interface. Our lecture covered installation of the Unix/Linux operating systems and configuration of the system with emphasis on network administration. During labs we learned Unix/Linux commands and developed scripts for administration purposes.

Productivity Applications Our class advanced our knowledge of Microsoft Office. We developed our skills further in MS Word and Excel. During lab we created documents and spreadsheets that can used to assist business in the workplace.

Introduction to Database Systems While using Microsoft Access we learned some basic concepts and features. Some of the things we learned were: How to create flat and relational databases Design queries and reports Introduction to SQL

Client/Server Network Database We created a database for larger networks using oracle software. We were exposed to sharing techniques need to safeguard the database as well as sharing techniques. We also learned how to create queries, add data and delete data.

Principles of Management Our class viewed problems managers face as well as how these problems affect organizations. We viewed case studies of how business use theoretical principles, problem solving, decision- making, and critical thinking. Our class project was to create a virtual business to develop skills in problem solving, decision- making, and critical thinking.
