What is a cinquain? A cinquain is a five-line poem that has special syllable counts. A cinquain poem has its own unique format.

What is the layout? Line 1: A one-word line, should be a noun. This is your subject. Line 2: Two adjectives about the subject. Line 3: Three verbs that end in –ing that are about the subject. Line 4: Four words about a feeling of the subject. Line 5: One word synonym about subject.

Speech But I already know how to talk!!

What is a noun? Person, place, thing or idea. Miss Mitchell Friendship Classroom Happiness Sunshine Gummy Bears School Snowflake Planet Computer Ice cream Baseball

What is a verb? Shows Action Fly Skip Jump Pounce Whisper Sneak Laugh Dance Kick Run Yell Write Play Follow

What is an adjective? Describing words that affect nouns Brown (Colors) Red Quick (Speed) Slow Huge (Size) Tiny Hard Fuzzy Elegant Mysterious Quiet Soft Cold Creamy

What is a synonym? A word having the same (or almost the same) meaning as another word. An alternative to the word. Dessert  Pudding Happy  Glad Movie  Film Sports  Athletics Give me examples:

A thesaurus… …is a dictionary that gives alternate words or synonyms. …can be used online as well. …can also be found of inside of a dictionary.

But how do I use a thesaurus?

Using a thesaurus…in the classroom. 1.Go over to the book shelf and take one down. 2.Search for the word you that you want just like you would while using a dictionary. 3.The alternative word will be listed. Just take your pick!

Using a thesaurus…interactively 1.Go to an assigned computer. 2.Go online. 3.Type in: 4.Once on the page type in the word that you would like to replace and hit SEARCH 5.Find the appropriate definition for the word that you are searching. 6.Select a synonym from the list of options.

Let’s do it together! 1.At your computer click on the internet explorer icon: 2.Type in for the website. 3.Type in the word fuzzy. What comes up for synonyms? What is other word could you use?

Now it’s time to make your own Cinquain!

How to start: 1.Start by using the Gather Your Thoughts work sheet to get ideas on what subject you want to use. 2.Next use the Cinquain Graphic Organizer worksheet to start your poem. 3.Be sure to use both types of thesauruses to create synonyms in your poem! 4.Put the finishing touches on your cinquain.

Finally… 1.Practice your poems together and tonight with your family for homework. 2.Pick out your favorite and be prepared to be video taped tomorrow! 3.Have fun!
