1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity STANDARD 1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity

SUBSTANDARD 1.a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness As part of my coursework, I created an instructional PowerPoint to enhance a mathematics lesson involving measurement. The main objective of the PowerPoint was to provide students with the ability to develop an understanding and recognize the need for standard units of measurement. The PowerPoint included definitions, examples, and provided links for access to additional supporting material. The PowerPoint also allowed for student interaction through solvable problems. Creating the instructional PowerPoint taught me the importance of using visual aid representation for problem solving and illustration of concepts to inspire student learning and facilitate creative thinking and inventiveness.

SUBSTANDARD 1.b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources As part of my coursework, I created a WebQuest to enhance a social studies lesson associated with the Constitution. The purpose of the WebQuest was to help students understand and describe the principals and practices regarding the Constitution of the United States and the Tennessee State Constitution. The WebQuest demonstrated an instructional activity that allowed students to research information using the Internet in order to complete a series of tasks that involved problem solving through short answer questions and written reflections. Creating the WebQuest taught me the importance of using high-interest level activities that facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity so students remain fully engaged throughout the lesson.

SUBSTANDARD 1.d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments Throughout this course, my fellow classmates and I had the opportunity to have an online discussion about why it is important for students to present their work, as well as the advantages and disadvantages to using multimedia projects over simple paper projects. Personally, I believe it is important for students to present their work because it shows that they fully understand the material. An advantage to using multimedia projects is that is allows students to think creatively. A disadvantage is that they can be more time consuming. Receiving collaborative feedback from classmates enhanced my knowledge about this topic by explaining that multimedia projects have the opportunity for creativity as long as they activity is fun and exciting for students.

2. Design and develop digital age learning experience and assessments STANDARD 2. Design and develop digital age learning experience and assessments

SUBSTANDARD 2.a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity Throughout my coursework, I created the interactive whiteboard, How Many 10’s Does It Take to Make 100? The purpose of the activity was to have students use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. The students would use different forms of money to determine place value and solve problems using addition and subtraction. Designing the interactive whiteboard taught me how to effectively promote student learning and assessments using digital tools.

SUBSTANDARD 2.c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources During my field observations, I noticed that each learning activity was approached in a different manor. A few of the activities were the same for the entire class, while the other activities could be completed using modifications for students who needed more support or enrichment. Students worked individually, as well as in groups depending on the level of participation required for the activity. Also, each learning activity was made easily accessible to students given their ability to use digital tools and resources. From my observations, I learned it is important to design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments that adapt to the grade level being taught.

SUBSTANDARD 2.d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching As previously stated, I designed a WebQuest intended to help students understand the principles and practices of the Constitution. Students researched information using the Internet in order to complete a series of tasks. Each task was associated with a different aspect of the Constitution. Students assessed their knowledge through short answer questions, written reflections, and educational games. The activity aligned with the contents described in the TN State Social Studies Standards, as well as the ISTE Standards for Students. Designing the WebQuest taught me the importance of using multiple assessments to acquire that students gain a broad range of knowledge during a lesson.

3. Model digital age work and learning STANDARD 3. Model digital age work and learning

SUBSTANDARD 3.a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations As a requirement for this course, I developed a web-based professional portfolio. The portfolio included a collection of items that represents my work in this course and demonstrates growth and skill level. The portfolio allows anyone to view my completed projects by downloading documents or clicking the provided links. The viewer will notice that each project incorporated a different tool of technology. Creating my professional portfolio allowed me to demonstrate fluency in a variety of technology systems as an innovative professional in a global and digital society.

SUBSTANDARD 3.b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation Throughout this course, I was able to research and use a variety of Web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 tools are easily created and most can be accessed from a variety of technology tools, such as computers and smart phones. Web 2.0 tools are an effective way for teachers to collaborate with students and parents about upcoming events, assignment dates and deadlines, as well as student behavior and progress.

SUBSTANDARD 3.c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats As part of my coursework, I gained knowledge about the different types of lecture capture. I used Audioboo, a web-based tool, to create an audio capture. I also acquired skills in creating and editing video using YouTube. Audio and video capture are effective uses of communication within and outside the classroom. They provide students and parents with essential information regarding coursework and school news.

4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility STANDARD 4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

SUBSTANDARD 4.a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources As mentioned, I created a WebQuest that demonstrated an instructional activity which allowed students to research information using the Internet in order to complete a series of tasks. Students used provided links to research and gather information on the required topic. Having students use the provided links ensured that the information gathered was valid and accurate. The WebQuest also included references and acknowledgments for all resources, including pictures, that were used to create and design the activity.

SUBSTANDARD 4.b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources During my field observations, I concluded that some modifications are required to meet the needs of all students. I learned that most educational games offer different levels, which seemed to be effective for students who needed more support or enrichment. Each student was provided a computer and access to the same educational game, however, the game level was set to meet the needs of each student to enhance critical and creative thinking, as well as problem solving.

SUBSTANDARD 4.c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information Throughout my coursework, I learned that it is important to integrate technology that serves an instructional purpose. After completing a series of projects, I concluded that activities requiring technology should be fun and engaging for students, however, they must be educational and connect to current lessons and standards. Also, I found that providing students with links to appropriate sites before researching information will help promote digital citizenship and responsibility.

5. Engage in professional growth and leadership STANDARD 5. Engage in professional growth and leadership

SUBSTANDARD 5.b. Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology of others As part of my coursework, I developed a lesson plan that incorporated technology. Students were required to gather research from a provided link to investigate how animals can be grouped according to their habitats. I navigated students through the website, while modeling how to effectively gather information for research. Designing a lesson plan that demonstrates technology infusion will allow for growth and development of student’s technology skills.

SUBSTANDARD 5.c. Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning As part of my coursework, I researched the effectiveness of mobile learning. I concluded that it is important to incorporate technology that best relates to the student’s needs. Research shows that mobile learning demonstrates a fun way to use multimedia that engages students in learning content and skills. Incorporating mobile devices in the classroom is now a creative and modern way to enhance and support student learning.

SUBSTANDARD 5.d. Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community As mentioned, I developed a web-based professional portfolio as part of my coursework. Creating a portfolio allows viewers to see a collection of my work that demonstrates growth and skill. As a teacher, it is important to be perceived as a professional and a leader of the community. Having a collection of my work displayed in a portfolio will help achieve success within the teaching profession.
