UCSF School of Nursing MS Program Redesign Task Force Brown Bag Presentation Nov 2013

Why do we need to consider change? FactorDetails Student Interested in DNP (exit survey) Multiple pathway of entry Desire more flexible scheduling and hybrid courses; flipped classroom; more application in class (face-to-face) Offer MEPN students a degree* Faculty Scarce faculty resources/utilization Report increased inquiry re: DNP program Professional /Certification Will DNP be terminal degree? (AACN) Is Master program going away? BSN needed for Magnet Status IT Infrastructure Online curriculum will require IT infrastructure to support curriculum design and delivery Cost assumption Online program could reduce cost over time Hybrid coursework could reduce faculty workload over time

Charge of MS Program Redesign Task Force Work through Summer 2013 Generate “basics” (form/structure/content) of initial proposal/concept for Fall 2015 Present proposal at Fall 2013 Full Faculty meeting & Vote Roxanne Garbez as facilitator Judy Martin-Holland as consultant Decisions Task Force NOT requested to address: Cost (financial sustainability/viability) # of specialties in SoN Curricular changes for implementation

Membership & Timeline MembershipPN: Roxanne Garbez (facilitator) MEPN: Pam Bellefeuille & Sheila Proctor CHS: Carol Dawson-Rose, JoAnne Saxe, & Suzan Stringari-Murray FHCN: Angel Chen & Kim Dau SBS: Susan Chapman Aug-Nov 2013Committee meetings August 5, 14, 21, 27 September 11, 18, 24 October 1, 9, 16, 23 Nov 6, 21 Oct 18, Faculty Council Nov 13, 2013Faculty Brown bag session Nov 22, Full Faculty Mtg Last week of NovFaculty vote

Current SoN Structure MEPN BSN Master PhD PM DNP* CNL PM APRN Entry point Optional step out year Optional step out year *PM DNP Fall 2015 Degree rec’d Entry or Degree

Proposed Changes Incorporate DNP (Fall 2015) Add RN/MS Program (aka generic masters of science) Propose curricular changes: Online or hybrid Core courses Increase curriculum flexibility for students

Proposed MS Structure MEPN BSN Master* PhD PM DNP Master ( Generic MS & OEH Specialist ) Master*: APRN, Health Policy, APPHN PM APRN Core Specialty Entry point Optional step out year Optional step out year Degree rec’d Entry or Degree Core + 8 Prof units

Pros of Proposed MS Structure Student Most educational tracks available Preserve MEPN and large applicant pool Preserve Masters specialties (reason to choose UCSF; not found at other institutions) Diverse applicant pool Diverse learners, coursework and teaching styles Faculty Least amount of change for specialties Faculty already in place to teach specialties Consolidation of coursework – streamline curriculum (while maintaining high quality) Develop core DNP faculty Invest in our own faculty (all levels) Professional/ Certification Maintain MS specialties while developing DNP -> then expand DNP with controlled phase out of current way of offering specialties Cost Preserves PM programs – generate revenue

Cons of Proposed MS Structure Student Variable MS applicant pool from year to year Faculty MS core curriculum need to address diverse learner needs (MEPN, generic MS, MS) Unclear how MEPN curriculum transitions into generic MS curriculum Faculty development needed to develop effective and efficient teaching styles (online and face-to-face) Restructuring/streamlining for a (much) leaner curriculum Cost Maintains same # of specialties -> doesn’t address resource issues

Long-term Proposal BSN DEPN (MEPN/generic MS) PhD Need MS in transit? 3-5 years DNP (APRN) No MS in transit 3 calendar years

Next Steps - Continuation of MS Program Redesign Committee Work & Considerations Policy changes (ACA/IOM) Nursing workforce trend Cost analysis Obtain feedback from key stakeholders, especially students Chairs and Specialty Directors to discuss future of each specialty program Prioritize tasks and create timeline Curriculum planning & innovative instructional designs/methods (i.e. clinical intensives, or flipped classrooms) Faculty development
